Start by identifying whether the remastered game fails to launch or closes unexpectedly, or whether it runs with uneven motion. Those symptoms can have different causes, so record when they happen, check requirements and updates for the exact game, and work through the matching steps below one change at a time.
Before troubleshooting, capture what is happening
Write down the game and edition, the store or launcher, your Windows version, and your PC’s CPU, graphics processor (GPU), and memory (RAM). Note whether the crash occurs at startup or during play, copy any error message, and describe whether stutter happens throughout the game or at a repeatable scene.
This information helps you compare your PC with the game’s requirements and gives support staff a reproducible description. Steam notes that launch failures can have many causes across different system configurations: Steam: Game will not launch.
Check the game’s updates and exact PC requirements
Check the publisher’s notices for patches or known compatibility issues, then compare your PC with the requirements for that specific game and edition. Steam’s general Windows launch guidance also recommends updating Windows and computer drivers and checking system requirements (Steam Support).

Do not use another remaster’s requirements as a stand-in. For example, Steam lists separate minimum and recommended PC specifications for Dark Souls: Remastered; those figures apply to that game, not to remasters as a category.
If a Steam game crashes or is missing content, verify its files
- Restart your PC and Steam.
- In your Steam Library, right-click the game and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Let the check finish, then launch the game and see whether the original problem remains.
Steam says its integrity check can help when game content is missing or a game crashes. A message that one or more files failed verification does not by itself prove corruption: local configuration files may be expected to differ and not be replaced. See Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files. This procedure applies to Steam installations; other launchers may have their own repair option.
Check DirectX and graphics information without installing random packages
Use the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DxDiag) to view DirectX and display-driver information. Microsoft explains how to open and run DxDiag. Then compare what it reports with the game’s requirements and the publisher’s support instructions.
DirectX is part of Windows, and the appropriate version and update route depend on the Windows release. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, use Windows Update for the DirectX version included with that OS rather than assuming a separate generic installer will provide a newer version. Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance describes the OS-dependent routes.

If the game stutters, test rendering and background activity
Change one setting at a time and replay the same scene or sequence. Note the original setting and whether the change affects the stutter; that makes it easier to undo an unhelpful change and identify a useful one.
- Check the GPU in use: On a PC with more than one GPU, confirm the game is using the intended graphics processor.
- Compare display modes: If the game offers them, test windowed or borderless mode against full-screen mode.
- Try Windows 11’s windowed-game option only when it applies: “Optimizations for windowed games” is for compatible DirectX 10/11 games running windowed or borderless. Windows 11 lets you turn it off for an individual app; treat this as a targeted test, not a general stutter fix. See Microsoft’s windowed-game optimization instructions.
- Look for other system load: Background startup apps, limited storage, outdated software, and older hardware are among the factors Microsoft identifies as possible causes of slow PC performance. Its Windows performance guidance covers additional checks.
If simpler checks fail, isolate a possible software conflict
Steam recommends disabling non-essential software when troubleshooting launch failures (Steam Support). On Windows 10 or Windows 11, a clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, which can help determine whether another app or service is interfering.
- Follow Microsoft’s instructions to perform a clean boot in Windows.
- Test the game while Windows is in that state and note whether the symptom changes.
- Restore Normal startup after the test, and re-enable any items you disabled as directed by Microsoft.
A clean boot temporarily changes startup behavior; it is a diagnostic step, not a permanent setup recommendation.
If the whole display flickers, check for a display-driver problem
When flickering or scrambled visuals affect the desktop as well as the game, open Task Manager and see whether it flickers too. Microsoft says that this check can help distinguish a display-driver issue from an incompatible app. Depending on what changed and when, updating, rolling back, or reinstalling the display driver may be appropriate; use Microsoft’s screen-flicker troubleshooting steps.

- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Do not start by removing drivers for an isolated in-game stutter. The display-wide check is more relevant when the problem also appears outside the game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact the game’s support team
If the game still crashes or stutters after the relevant checks, contact its publisher or the support channel for the store or launcher. Include:
- The game name, edition, and launcher.
- Your Windows version and CPU, GPU, and RAM.
- The exact error text, if one appears.
- When the problem occurs and the steps needed to reproduce it.
- What you already checked or changed, and whether any change affected the symptom.
Without the specific game, error, and PC details, general troubleshooting cannot establish a unique cause. A precise report gives the game’s support team the information needed to investigate a title-specific defect or compatibility issue.
