The Aadhaar App is UIDAI’s official mobile application for accessing selected Aadhaar services. To get started, install it from the official app-store listing linked by UIDAI, then register with your Aadhaar number, a compatible phone and an internet connection. Here’s how registration works, what UIDAI says the app can do, and which privacy and security controls it describes.
How to find and install the official Aadhaar App
UIDAI says the Aadhaar App is developed and managed by the Unique Identification Authority of India. Use UIDAI’s official Aadhaar App guidance to reach its Android or iOS store listing, and verify that UIDAI is shown as the publisher before installing. This helps distinguish the official application from similarly named apps.
What you need to register
UIDAI says onboarding requires an internet-connected smartphone running Android 9.0 or later, or iOS 16.0 or later. The registration flow also requires your Aadhaar number, access to the SIM card you select in the app, face authentication and a six-digit PIN. The app supports 13 languages, according to UIDAI.
How to register in the Aadhaar App

Open the app and select your preferred language.

Enter your Aadhaar number and accept the terms and privacy policy.

Select the SIM card for the mobile number associated with your Aadhaar, as prompted by the app.

Complete the face-authentication step.

Create a six-digit PIN to protect access to the app.
These are the steps UIDAI describes for onboarding; prompts or service availability may change as the app is updated. UIDAI says one device can hold up to five profiles.

UIDAI lists the following as services available through the Aadhaar App. These are UIDAI’s stated capabilities, not an independent test of each feature.

For updates, UIDAI says a changed mobile number and/or address may take up to 30 days to appear in the app. Its FAQ describes a document-based address-update process involving face authentication and a ₹75 fee. Check UIDAI’s current instructions for eligibility, procedure and fee before submitting a request, since service rules can change.
Privacy and security controls UIDAI describes
UIDAI says app access is protected by a PIN and that onboarding includes face authentication. It also describes biometric lock and unlock controls, plus selective sharing: the holder can choose whether to share Aadhaar data in full or in part, and with whom and for what purpose. UIDAI states, “No identity data is shared without the explicit consent of the Aadhaar Number Holder.” See the UIDAI Aadhaar App FAQ for its explanation of consent and data sharing.

UIDAI’s FAQ also states that the app does not capture location and cannot be used when developer mode is enabled. Treat these as specific statements from UIDAI, not as a general guarantee that the app or your phone is risk-free. The official material cited here does not establish an independent security audit or comparative security study.

UIDAI says secure QR codes on PVC Aadhaar cards and e-Aadhaar continue to work with the app or UIDAI’s QR Code scanner. A PVC card or additional hardware is not required to register for the app.
