AI coding tools can produce code quickly, but fast generation does not show that a change is correct, safe, or understood. The more consequential question for a reviewer is whether they can reconstruct what the change is meant to do, why it was built this way, and what evidence supports approving it.

That is a useful engineering thesis—not a universal research finding. Available studies measure different outcomes, and none establishes that AI-generated changes always take longer to review or that human understanding is now the dominant bottleneck across software development.

What changes when code generation gets faster?

A coding agent can produce a substantial branch faster than a person can form a reliable mental model of it. That observation, expressed by Eve in the September 25, 2026 article behind this title, describes a plausible shift in where engineering effort is concentrated; it is not a measured result about all teams or repositories.

When implementation is quick, review still has to answer questions that code generation alone cannot settle: Does the change meet the request? Does it fit the system’s architecture? Are its tradeoffs acceptable? What could fail, and how would the team know? The reviewer needs to connect the original request to decisions, changed code, tests, and risk—not merely scan syntax or accept an agent’s summary.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Consider an agent asked to add a retry to an API client. A useful review should make the intended behavior explicit: which failures are retried, how many attempts are allowed, and whether retries can duplicate an operation. It should identify the affected client and call sites, explain the relevant design choice, point to tests for the retry limit and non-retryable failures, and surface unresolved questions such as whether requests are idempotent. A concise explanation helps only if the reviewer can check each claim against code and evidence.

What the studies do—and do not—show

Results differ because the studies tested different tasks and outcomes. Learning, code quality, perceived productivity, and total engineering productivity are not interchangeable measures.

Study What it measured What it found What it cannot establish
Anthropic, 2025 A randomized, tutorial-like task using the unfamiliar Python Trio library. The 52 participants were mostly junior software engineers who knew Python. Participants using AI assistance scored 17% lower on a short quiz about concepts they had used minutes earlier. The task was slightly faster with AI, but the time difference was not statistically significant. Participants who used AI for explanations and conceptual help showed stronger mastery. Whether AI assistance generally reduces understanding of production code or makes code review slower. The result is bounded to short-term learning in this task.
GitHub, 2024 study; article updated 2025 A randomized task in which 202 experienced developers built a web-server API with or without Copilot. Submissions were assessed using unit tests and expert review. Copilot-assisted submissions received better average code-quality ratings, and participants were more likely to approve them. GitHub researcher Jared Bauer summarized the result as code with “increased functionality and improved readability” and higher quality and approval rates. Whether authors developed deeper system understanding, or whether the result applies to other tasks, tools, or mature production repositories. This is vendor-published, task-specific evidence.
METR, February 2026 update Newer productivity data involving 57 developers, 143 repositories, and more than 800 tasks. METR cautions that selection and measurement problems make its central estimate a poor proxy for real-world productivity impact. A definitive general estimate of how much agentic tools improve or reduce developer productivity.
GitHub, 2022 Survey responses from more than 2,000 U.S.-based developers compared with anonymized usage data. Acceptance rates correlated with developers’ self-reported productivity gains. Proof that perceived gains equal an equivalent increase in objective output. The reported relationship is correlational.

Taken together, these findings do not point to a single universal effect. AI assistance coincided with lower short-term quiz scores in one learning task and better average code-quality ratings in a separate coding task. Neither result directly measures review effort across production repositories. The evidence does not establish that human understanding has become the dominant bottleneck throughout software development.

What a review artifact should make visible

A review is easier to trust when its explanation helps a person move from the task to the evidence and back to the code. The article proposes connecting the original request, architectural decisions, agent traces, changed symbols, tests, and supporting evidence. A diagram or semantic summary can orient the reviewer, but it should not replace the ability to inspect the implementation behind its claims.

  • Intent: State the requested behavior and the conditions under which it should hold.
  • Decisions: Explain meaningful architectural or implementation choices, including alternatives or tradeoffs that affect behavior.
  • Scope: Identify the changed symbols and important callers or dependencies so the reviewer can see where the change fits.
  • Verification: Point to tests and other evidence, and describe which behavior each one checks. A passing test supports a claim; it does not prove every relevant behavior is safe.
  • Risk and uncertainty: Name edge cases, assumptions, and open questions rather than presenting an incomplete explanation as certainty.

Agent traces can help explain how work was produced, but they are not a substitute for examining the resulting code. A reviewer should be able to follow an explanation to the relevant implementation and test, especially where the explanation could be mistaken.

Keep review reversible and approval human

The article recommends making review reversible: let reviewers inspect, ask questions, and compare alternatives without silently modifying the branch being evaluated. Keeping those actions separate helps preserve a clear record of what was submitted and what a reviewer changed or suggested.

Approval remains a human judgment about the change and its evidence. A generated summary, diagram, or favorable quality rating can guide attention, but it does not establish that the implementation is correct in the context of the whole system.

Ask where agent traces and prompts go

Traces may contain repository context, so teams should establish their data boundaries before relying on a workflow. The article raises practical questions: Where are traces stored? Can telemetry be disabled? Which component sends prompts to model providers? Answers depend on the specific product and its current configuration; verify them in current product documentation rather than assuming a particular privacy behavior.

Measure the outcome you actually care about

Teams evaluating coding agents should separate dimensions that are easy to conflate. Faster task completion is not the same as learning; passing tests is not the same as readability or maintainability; a favorable review rating is not proof of system-level understanding. Likewise, developers’ perceived productivity gains do not by themselves quantify objective output.

  • Measure task speed separately from comprehension and learning.
  • Distinguish functional correctness from readability, maintainability, and reviewability.
  • Keep self-reported gains separate from measured outcomes.
  • Do not assume results from short, controlled tasks transfer directly to mature repositories or asynchronous, agent-driven work.
  • Assess whether explanations link patch-level claims to evidence about affected system behavior and risk.

The available sources do not provide a single common benchmark that resolves these comparisons, an independent field-wide measure showing that understanding is now the main bottleneck, or a universal estimate of AI’s effect on review time across agents, languages, and repository types. The practical case for better review artifacts is therefore about making verification easier—not claiming that every AI-assisted change creates more work.
