For Rahul Vyas’s Pocket Retro companion-app build, the reported API token spend was approximately $7.20. That is the cost of model usage for this one build—not a price for developing a companion app. It excludes engineering time and the work of testing and proving platform behavior on devices.

What the $7.20 figure covers

Vyas’s September 3, 2026 article reports approximately $7.20 in cumulative API token spend across the described build. He calculated it from logged token consumption multiplied by the API list rates of the models used. He describes this as an apples-to-apples token-cost view, not necessarily the amount shown on a subscription invoice. Read Vyas’s build account.

The running total in the build log rose from about $1.30 across the first two parts to $7.20 by the end of the listed work. The same account reports totals of $6.20 for season one, $3.60 for season two, and $7.20 for season three, or $17 for the trilogy. These are the author’s rounded, project-specific figures; they describe API usage, not the full cost of the work.

What the build involved

The project used Blazor Hybrid and covered nine capability interfaces across three hosts. The account names push notifications, haptics, a scanner, offline support, a signed build, and continuous integration (CI). That scope helps explain what the token-spend figure relates to, but it does not turn the figure into a reusable estimate for another app.

Why API spend is not the real project budget

The API meter records model usage; it does not price the time spent implementing, testing, and validating the app. Vyas describes device and platform checks as a substantial part of the work: “The real cost was the bench — a GPS fix to fake, airplane mode to toggle, a vibrator log to read, a Firebase console to watch, a desktop to photograph without photographing anything else.”

The account also records unresolved or limited platform behavior: a Windows notification attempt did not produce a visible banner, a Maps launch crashed in the emulator, and the Maps flow was not shown working on a real device. The reported spend therefore should not be read as evidence that every feature worked on every supported device. The effort to investigate these edges—and the limits of what was demonstrated—is outside the token total.

How to use this figure for your own planning

Treat approximately $7.20 as a historical example of API usage for this particular build, not as an app-development quote or a forecast. A useful budget separates the different sources of cost:

Current API pricing is a separate question

OpenAI’s API pricing page lists rates per million tokens and distinguishes models, processing tiers, and context lengths. Rates can change, and the current page does not verify Vyas’s historical token count or calculation. For a new estimate, check the live price for the specific model and processing choice you expect to use, then estimate usage separately. Neither a current rate nor this project’s past total is a universal companion-app budget.
