If your AI speaker sounds distorted, first check whether the problem happens with every audio source or only one app, stream, or Bluetooth connection. Then restart the speaker and check the affected connection before considering a factory reset. Distortion across multiple sources can make a speaker fault more plausible, but it does not prove one; the steps below help narrow the issue without replacing or resetting the device prematurely.
Identify when the distortion happens
Try a spoken assistant response, a stream you know is working, and Bluetooth playback if your speaker supports it. Use a moderate volume and change only one thing at a time. The comparison is a practical way to narrow the symptom, not a manufacturer-confirmed diagnostic test.
- Only one app or stream sounds bad: Try a different item in that service and another playback source. The app, stream, or input path may be involved.
- Only Bluetooth sounds distorted: Troubleshoot the Bluetooth connection separately.
- Only assistant speech sounds distorted: Compare it with music or another stream from the speaker before changing network or device settings.
- Distortion happens across sources: A device-side issue becomes more plausible, though the pattern alone does not establish a hardware fault.
- It happens only at high volume: Note the volume at which it starts and whether lowering it changes the sound. This is useful information for support, but does not identify a cause by itself.
Also note whether the sound is crackling, popping, muffled, or cutting in and out, and whether the problem began after a move, software update, power change, or network change. These details help you describe the fault clearly.
Restart the speaker and check the source
Restart the speaker using the manufacturer’s instructions, then replay the same audio and compare it with another source. Avoid changing multiple settings at once so you can tell whether a step made a difference.

For an Echo with a setup or connection problem, Amazon’s setup guidance says to unplug the device for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Follow your model’s instructions if you have a different speaker.
Fix streaming glitches by checking Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi checks are most relevant when streaming audio breaks up or the speaker is disconnecting at the same time. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that Wi-Fi works, confirming the password, restarting the router and speaker, and force-closing and reopening the Google Home app.

- Confirm another device can connect to your Wi-Fi network.
- Check that the speaker is using the correct network and password.
- Restart the router and speaker, then try the stream again.
- If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, test each available band.
- As a temporary diagnostic, try connecting to a phone hotspot. Google notes that hotspot use is not fully supported, so treat this only as a comparison, not a permanent setup.
Google’s setup advice suggests placing the speaker within 15–20 feet (4–6 m) of the router during troubleshooting. That is setup guidance, not a universal placement rule for sound quality.
Troubleshoot Bluetooth-only distortion
If the problem occurs only over Bluetooth, check the connection before changing Wi-Fi or resetting the speaker. Amazon’s Echo Bluetooth troubleshooting recommends updating software, reducing possible wireless interference, and removing then pairing the device again. Amazon lists support for A2DP SNK and AVRCP Bluetooth profiles; check that the connected device supports the relevant profiles.

- Install available software updates for the Echo and connected device.
- Move the devices away from possible sources of wireless interference and test again.
- Confirm the connected device supports the Bluetooth profiles listed in Amazon’s guidance.
- Remove or unpair the Bluetooth connection, then pair the devices again.
If assistant speech and built-in streaming also distort, a Bluetooth-only fix is unlikely to address the entire symptom; that is a diagnostic inference, not a confirmed cause rule.
Check power without guessing at adapters
If the speaker is restarting or showing other signs of power trouble, check that its power connections are secure and the outlet works. Use the supplied adapter and cable where possible. Amazon’s power guidance concerns startup faults and says a replacement adapter must meet the requirements for that particular device. Do not choose a substitute based on connector fit alone; use the exact model’s documentation.

Make a factory reset the last software step
Try the simpler source, restart, network, or Bluetooth checks first. Reset procedures differ by model. Google’s factory-reset instructions warn that a reset clears device data, cannot be undone, and use physical button steps that vary by device. Check the instructions for your exact model and be prepared to set it up again.
When to contact support
If distortion continues across assistant speech and other sources after a restart and relevant connection checks, contact the manufacturer’s support or an authorized repair channel rather than assuming a particular component has failed. If practical, make a short recording and note the model, serial number, sources tested, volume level, and steps already tried. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal repair threshold or a single common cause of distortion.
