It does not make you anonymous to websites, hide your activity from your school, employer, or internet provider, or protect you from malicious sites and malware.
What does Incognito mode actually do?
It opens a separate browsing session that reduces the local record left behind when the session ends. In Chrome on a computer, temporary cookies and site data are available while the session is open so websites can function; Chrome removes them after all Incognito windows close and does not retain the visited-site record. Firefox says it erases history and tracking cookies when the last private window closes. In Edge, InPrivate clears a broader set of session data when all InPrivate windows close.
Private browsing is therefore useful when you do not want ordinary browsing history or session data left in the browser on a shared device. It is not a promise that nothing is saved anywhere. Bookmarks or favorites and downloaded files remain on the device in Chrome and Edge, and files you copy elsewhere can remain too. Edge also notes that extensions allowed to run in InPrivate can save browsing history. Google’s Chrome guidance, Mozilla’s Firefox guidance, and Microsoft’s Edge guidance describe their products’ behavior; settings can vary by browser version and platform.
Is Incognito/Private Mode Really Private?
Only in a limited, device-level sense. A private window does not prevent a website from receiving information when you visit it. If you sign in to a service, activity can be associated with that account. A site may also personalize what it shows during the private session.

Your connection is not hidden from the network carrying it. A school, employer, or internet provider may be able to observe activity on its network. Google puts the limit plainly: “While Incognito can help keep your browsing private on your device, it doesn’t make you invisible.” The Federal Trade Commission explains that the visited site can see online activity even when private browsing later deletes local history.

These are vendor descriptions of their own products, not a universal private-browsing standard. In particular, Chrome’s third-party-cookie default should not be assumed for every browser or every tracking method. The FTC distinguishes first-party tracking by the site you visit from third-party tracking by another company a site allows to track you; browser protections vary. Choose a control for the privacy or security problem you have
To limit history left on a shared device
Use a private window and close every private window when finished. Check whether you saved a bookmark or downloaded a file: those items can remain even after the private session ends. Private browsing addresses browser data on that device, not copies, records, or account activity elsewhere.
To reduce cookies or some tracking
Review the browser’s cookie and tracking-prevention settings; they are separate from the act of opening a private window. Blocking cookies or using stricter prevention can make some sites behave unexpectedly. Ad blockers filter page content and some may block trackers, but they do not necessarily block every ad or tracker and do not detect or block malware.

To limit location access
Review both the browser’s site permissions and your operating system’s location settings. InPrivate does not itself stop a site from requesting precise location.
To reduce what the local network or ISP can directly observe
A VPN routes traffic through remote servers, changing what the local network or ISP can directly observe. That shifts trust to the VPN provider, which may be able to track browsing activity; a VPN is not a guarantee of anonymity and does not prevent cookie-based tracking. Mozilla discusses this trade-off in its private-browsing guidance.

To defend against phishing, malicious sites, or malware
Do not rely on Incognito or Private Browsing as a security shield. Microsoft and Mozilla both say private mode does not add protection from malicious sites, viruses, or malware. Use appropriate browser and device security protections, and treat suspicious links and downloads cautiously.
