For many adults, the safest lifestyle approach is a combination: eat a DASH-style diet, reduce sodium, get regular physical activity, work toward a healthy weight when appropriate, and limit or avoid alcohol. These changes can help, but they do not replace prescribed medication for everyone. Talk with a health professional about your readings and care plan, and do not stop or change medication on your own.
Start with the changes that work together
There is no single food, supplement, or lifestyle change that is right for every person. The 2025 U.S. AHA/ACC high blood pressure guideline supports a combination of healthy eating, sodium reduction, physical activity, weight management when appropriate, and alcohol reduction. The American Heart Association says many people can lower their blood pressure into a healthy range or keep it in a healthy range through lifestyle changes; some people also need medication.
Choose a DASH-style eating pattern
DASH is an overall eating pattern, not a special product or one “blood-pressure-lowering” food. It emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans and other legumes, nuts and seeds, low-fat or nonfat dairy, fish, lean meats and poultry, and non-tropical oils. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) provides DASH eating-plan guidance.
Make the pattern practical
- Build meals around vegetables, fruit, and whole grains, then add a protein such as beans, fish, poultry, or lean meat.
- Choose lower-fat dairy options if you include dairy.
- Use nuts, seeds, and non-tropical oils as part of meals rather than relying on highly processed foods.
- Make changes you can sustain; a consistent overall pattern matters more than a single “superfood.”
Reduce sodium, especially from packaged and restaurant foods
The 2025 AHA/ACC guideline summary advises consuming less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day and moving toward 1,500 mg per day. NHLBI’s DASH guidance gives 2,300 mg daily, or 1,500 mg if desired. These are daily intake targets, not amounts to add on top of the sodium already in food.

Find and reduce hidden sodium
- Read Nutrition Facts labels and compare sodium per serving; check how many servings you actually eat.
- Choose lower-sodium packaged foods when available.
- Cut back on restaurant and convenience foods, which can contribute substantial sodium.
- When cooking, use less salt and build flavor with herbs, spices, citrus, or other seasonings without added sodium.
DASH and sodium reduction have been studied together. In NHLBI’s summary of the DASH-Sodium trial, 412 adults received all food and beverages for one month. Lowering sodium reduced blood pressure on either diet, and DASH combined with 1,500 mg of sodium lowered it more than the typical American diet at each of the three sodium levels tested. Individual responses vary; the trial does not promise a particular reduction for every person.
Build regular activity into your week
The 2025 AHA/ACC guideline summary recommends at least 75–150 minutes per week of aerobic and/or resistance activity. Choose forms of movement that fit your ability and schedule, and build up gradually if you are not active now. If you have a health condition, symptoms with exertion, or uncertainty about what is safe, ask a health professional how to begin.

Set a realistic weight goal when it applies
For adults with overweight or obesity, the 2025 guideline release identifies a reduction of at least 5% of body weight as a goal that supports health and blood pressure. This is not a target for everyone, and it need not be pursued through rapid or extreme dieting. Ask your care team for a suitable approach, particularly if you have other health conditions.
Limit or avoid alcohol
The 2025 U.S. guideline says ideally consume no alcohol. For people who choose to drink, its limits are no more than two drinks daily for men and one for women. These are upper limits, not recommended targets; reducing intake or avoiding alcohol may be the more appropriate choice for some people.

Use home readings as part of clinical care
Home blood pressure monitoring can help confirm an office diagnosis and track progress as part of an integrated care plan. A suitable automatic upper-arm blood pressure monitor can support that process, but owning a monitor does not diagnose or treat hypertension on its own. Share readings with your health professional and follow their instructions for when and how to measure.
In the U.S. categories listed in the AHA’s 2025 guideline announcement, normal is below 120/80 mm Hg; elevated is systolic 120–129 with diastolic below 80; stage 1 is systolic 130–139 or diastolic 80–89; and stage 2 is systolic 140 or higher or diastolic 90 or higher. These are categorization thresholds, not a diagnosis based on one casual reading. Your clinician can interpret repeated measurements in context.

Be cautious with potassium-based salt substitutes
Salt substitutes that replace some sodium chloride with potassium chloride are not suitable for everyone. The World Health Organization issued lower-sodium salt-substitute guidance in 2025, but people with kidney problems or who take certain medications should consult a health professional before increasing potassium. Do not assume a product is safe just because it is labeled “low sodium.”
Know when lifestyle changes are not enough
Lifestyle changes are an important part of treatment, but NHLBI notes that medication may be prescribed if they do not control blood pressure. Persistent high readings, individual health conditions, and medication needs should be discussed with a health professional. Do not delay care while trying a diet or exercise change, and do not alter prescribed treatment without professional guidance.
