You can try Hermes Agent through a command-line chat, connect it to a messaging app, add reusable skills, schedule recurring jobs, or build a specialist bot or Python integration—without buying dedicated hardware. “Free” here means these setups do not inherently require a paid physical product; it does not mean model use or hosting is free. Hermes’ Nous Portal quick setup bills model and Tool Gateway use to a subscription, while other provider options may require an API key or subscription. What you need before choosing a Hermes setup
Hermes Agent, built by Nous Research, supports more than interactive chat: its documented workflows include terminal assistance, messaging integrations, skills, scheduled tasks, specialist bots, and Python use. The five options below are a practical selection from the documentation, not an official ranking. See the Hermes Agent documentation overview.
Begin with installation and a working conversation, then choose one workflow. The official learning path estimates about one hour for its beginner install, quickstart, CLI, and configuration sequence, and roughly two to three hours for its intermediate messaging, memory, cron, and skills path. These are documentation estimates, not guaranteed setup times. Review the learning path.
Most workflows depend on a working model/provider configuration. The setup route determines whether that means subscription billing or an API key; Hermes itself being open source does not make inference or always-on hosting free.

1. Try Hermes as a CLI coding assistant
The simplest place to start is an interactive terminal conversation. Give Hermes the relevant files or project context, then ask it to draft, explain, review, or run code. This is a software-only workflow: it does not call for a dedicated device, but it does need a configured model/provider and an appropriate local project context.
Keep the first task bounded—for example, ask for an explanation of one function or a proposed change to a small part of a project. Review generated code and commands before relying on them. The official learning path places CLI use in its beginner route. See the CLI learning path.

2. Connect Hermes to a messaging bot
Telegram or Discord can provide a familiar chat interface for sending requests to Hermes. This is useful if you would rather message the agent than work in a terminal, but it is not a credential-free shortcut: you must configure the relevant platform integration and whatever credentials it requires.
The learning path treats messaging as intermediate material. Configure and verify the connection before depending on it for regular use, and remember that the underlying model/provider still needs to be available. Review the documented messaging path.

3. Create or install a reusable skill
A skill gives Hermes a reusable procedure for a task. The quickstart says bundled skills are already installed; you can also add skills from the Skills Hub or author your own. This makes skills a practical next step when you find yourself repeatedly giving the agent the same process or instructions.
Start with an existing skill if it fits, or write a focused procedure for a recurring task. A skill extends how Hermes handles work; it does not replace the need for a configured provider when the agent performs inference. Read the quickstart’s skills and setup details.

4. Schedule a recurring briefing or check
Hermes cron can run one-shot or recurring jobs, such as checking server status or summarizing feed items, and send results to chat, files, or configured platform targets. That lets a task happen without you starting each run interactively. Read the scheduled tasks documentation.
For a first job, define what should run, how often it should run, and where its result should go. A valid model/provider and any delivery credentials are still necessary where the selected job and destination require them. Missing or invalid configuration can prevent a job from completing before inference begins; scheduling alone does not guarantee a successful run.

5. Stretch further with a specialist bot or Python integration
For a more advanced project, Hermes documents named bots that can have their own models, memory, skills, routines, and chats. You can also use Hermes as a Python library. These options make it possible to shape a setup around a particular task or integrate Hermes into code, but they require more design and configuration than starting a CLI conversation.
Treat either as a stretch project after you have a working basic setup. Decide what the bot or integration should do, then configure its model/provider and any interfaces or delivery paths it needs.
