AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation (ANC) to Apple’s open-fit earbuds, and it can reduce steady background noise without silicone tips. But the design cannot seal out sound like tip-sealed earbuds, and battery life with ANC is limited. They make the most sense if you want Apple’s features and dislike silicone tips—not if your priority is maximum isolation or long stretches of ANC.
How good is AirPods 5 noise cancellation?
For an earbud that sits open in the ear, the ANC is useful: it can quiet general background noise and low rumble. It does not make an open-fit earbud equivalent to a sealed one. Voices, announcements and other higher-frequency sounds may remain audible.
On a train, T3’s reviewer reported that ambient announcements could still be heard with ANC on, even as low-level background noise and general rumble were reduced. Tom’s Guide described the improvement over AirPods 4 with ANC as slight in its direct comparison and said neither pair delivers groundbreaking cancellation against silicone-tip models. Apple’s claim that AirPods 5 reduce “up to 50 percent more” external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC is Apple’s own comparison, not an independent review result. Apple says it tested in July 2026 with AirPods 5 paired to an iPhone 17 using prerelease AirPods firmware and iOS 27. Apple’s announcement.
SoundGuys reported a 59% average reduction in perceived loudness in its test, but cautioned that open-fit placement varies and its measurement is a general guide, not a guaranteed result for every listener. Its review units were purchased, and it tested the earbuds for four days. SoundGuys’ review.

Do AirPods 5 have silicone tips?
No. AirPods 5 are open-fit earbuds without silicone ear tips. That can suit people who find in-ear tips uncomfortable, but the trade-off is that the earbuds do not form a passive seal. Fit also affects comfort, sound and how well ANC works; the same pair may perform differently in different ears.
If blocking as much outside sound as possible matters more than avoiding tips, compare with silicone-tip earbuds. Their physical seal gives them an isolation advantage that ANC alone cannot supply in an open design.

AirPods 5 configurations and launch prices
Apple announced US launch prices of $129 for the standard case configuration and $149 for the wireless charging case configuration. The earbuds include ANC in both versions. Apple lists Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio, Adaptive EQ and an H2 chip for AirPods 5. AirPods 5 battery life: a real trade-off
With ANC on, Apple lists up to four hours of listening for the standard model. SoundGuys and Tom’s Guide report up to five hours for the wireless-case configuration. Total listening time with the case is reported at about 20 to 22 hours. These are rated or reported maximums, not guaranteed everyday results; actual runtime can vary with use and conditions. Apple’s specifications; SoundGuys; Tom’s Guide.
For commuting or shorter listening sessions, the runtime may be workable. For a long flight, a full workday, or any situation where you expect ANC to stay on for hours, the four-to-five-hour single-charge figures are a meaningful limitation.

AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4 ANC: is the upgrade worthwhile?
Apple says AirPods 5 offer up to 50 percent more external-noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC, based on its July 2026 test conditions. Tom’s Guide found the difference slight in its own direct comparison. Those claims answer different questions: Apple supplies a measured manufacturer comparison, while Tom’s Guide describes its listening impression. Neither establishes that AirPods 5 will noticeably outperform AirPods 4 ANC for every listener or fit.
If you already own AirPods 4 with ANC, the evidence here does not make noise cancellation alone a compelling reason to upgrade. Consider the change only if the new configuration’s features or fit suit you better; the available short-term reviews do not establish long-term durability or performance across all ear shapes.

Are AirPods 5 worth it?
They are a reasonable choice if you want Apple’s ecosystem features, prefer earbuds without silicone tips, and value having some noise reduction for everyday background sound. They are a weaker fit if your top priorities are strong isolation, a secure passive seal or extended ANC sessions.
- Choose the standard case if keeping the US launch price lower matters more than wireless charging, volume swipe and the longer stated runtime.
- Choose the wireless charging case if those three additions justify its $20 higher US launch price to you.
- Look at sealed earbuds instead if you need to block voices and announcements more effectively or want maximum isolation.
