Windows 11 has no single hardware-acceleration switch for every app. For supported Windows video apps, use Settings > Apps > Video playback. For Microsoft Edge, change its separate graphics-acceleration setting at edge://settings/system, restart the browser, and check whether video decoding is using the GPU.
Choose the setting for the app you use
The right control depends on where the video plays. Windows’ Video playback page applies to some apps that use the built-in Windows video platform; Edge has its own browser setting. Changing one does not necessarily change the other.

Change playback options for supported Windows apps
- Open Start, search for Settings, and open it.
- Go to Apps > Video playback.
- Review the options shown and adjust the one relevant to your issue.
Microsoft says the page covers some apps that use the built-in Windows video platform, including Photos and Movies & TV, as well as many third-party video apps from Microsoft Store. Depending on the PC’s hardware, its options can include video processing to enhance playback or playing video at a lower resolution to save network bandwidth. It does not control every desktop program or browser. Microsoft documents the page at Video playback settings in Windows. You can also open it with the URI ms-settings:videoplayback; Microsoft documents launching Settings pages in its Windows developer documentation.
Change and verify hardware acceleration in Edge
- In Edge, enter
edge://settings/systemin the address bar. - Turn Use graphics acceleration when available on or off, depending on whether you are testing acceleration or troubleshooting a playback problem.
- Restart Edge so the change takes effect.
- Open
edge://gpuand inspect Video Decode. - If the problem continues, reproduce it and open
edge://media-internals. Inspect the decoder name used for that video.
Microsoft identifies D3D11VideoDecoder and MediaFoundationVideoDecoder as hardware-accelerated paths, and FFmpegVideoDecoder as software decoding. An enabled setting does not guarantee hardware decoding for every video: Edge may fall back to software if acceleration is disabled or the GPU driver lacks support for the required H.264 profile. Do not confuse video decoding with GPU scheduling
Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, when available under Windows’ advanced Graphics settings, is a separate system-level option. Microsoft describes it as allowing Windows to offload most GPU scheduling to dedicated GPU hardware to reduce CPU load. It is not the same as an app’s video-decoding control. The Graphics page also includes per-app GPU preferences and other features; Microsoft’s documented app controls apply to eligible games. Availability of GPU scheduling depends on supported graphics hardware and display drivers. See Microsoft’s overview of the redesigned Graphics settings page.
If changing the setting does not fix playback
Check whether the video codec is supported
Acceleration cannot make an unsupported format playable. Microsoft says Edge supports H.264, while HEVC playback requires a valid HEVC Video Extension and a working decoder path. AV1 hardware decoding depends on the device and GPU. XAVC and XAVC HS are not supported by the built-in Windows playback stack. Use edge://media-internals to inspect playback details, and compare the video in another player to help distinguish a codec issue from an Edge-specific one.

Consider the graphics driver
A driver limitation can prevent hardware decoding even when the Edge setting is enabled. If diagnostics point to a driver issue, Microsoft recommends updating the GPU driver from the device manufacturer. You can also test the other setting state, restart Edge, and inspect the decoder again.
Check monitor refresh rates for stalls
If video repeatedly stops and starts on a multi-monitor setup, compare the monitors’ refresh rates. Microsoft Support warns that differing refresh rates across multiple monitors can cause video display problems; matching them is a reasonable troubleshooting test. Keep Edge Enhance video separate
Edge Enhance video is an additional feature, not another name for the standard graphics-acceleration switch. Microsoft says it works only while the device is connected to power; protected videos and videos that are small on screen are excluded. If multiple videos are active on a site, only the most recently played video is enhanced. Availability may vary by device, market, and browser version. Details are on Microsoft’s Enhance video page.
