To use Bluetooth for car audio, pair your phone with the car’s Bluetooth system, then select Bluetooth as the audio source. If your car lacks Bluetooth, you can often add it through an AUX receiver, an FM transmitter, a vehicle-specific adapter for the factory radio, or a Bluetooth replacement stereo. The right option depends on the car’s inputs, stereo, and the features you want to keep.
How to pair a phone with built-in car Bluetooth
Menu names and supported features vary by vehicle and audio system, so use the owner’s manual for the exact steps. Pairing is usually a one-time setup, but the car may require a separate source selection before music will play.
- Park safely. Make pairing and menu changes while the car is parked. Turn Bluetooth on in the phone’s Settings.
- Open Bluetooth or Phone settings in the car. On the display or audio unit, choose the option to add, pair, or connect a new device. The command may be named differently across models.
- Choose the car on your phone. Select the vehicle’s name from the phone’s available Bluetooth devices. If a code or confirmation prompt appears, make sure the prompts match and approve them on both devices.
- Select Bluetooth audio in the car. Choose Bluetooth as the audio source, then test music or a call while parked. Pairing for hands-free calls does not necessarily mean the stereo supports Bluetooth music streaming.
Manufacturer instructions illustrate why the manual matters: Chevrolet and Nissan use different menu labels, while Ford instructions treat pairing and audio-source selection as separate actions. A phone-projection system such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is also distinct from ordinary Bluetooth pairing; follow the car and phone instructions for whichever connection you intend to use.
Why the phone pairs but music does not play
A successful phone pairing may provide calls without enabling music playback. Check whether the vehicle’s audio system supports Bluetooth audio streaming, then select the Bluetooth audio source on the car stereo. If the car offers separate phone and media connections, make sure media audio is enabled for the vehicle in the phone’s Bluetooth settings.

How to fix a failed Bluetooth pairing
- Check both devices. Confirm Bluetooth is on in the phone and car, and make the phone discoverable during setup if required.
- Check for updates. Install available phone or vehicle-system software updates when the manufacturer provides them.
- Clear an old connection. Remove the car from the phone’s saved Bluetooth devices and remove the phone from the car’s saved devices, then pair again. If the car stores several phones, check which one is currently active.
- Use the vehicle-specific reset instructions. If the car detects the phone but pairing still fails, follow the owner’s manual reset procedure or contact the vehicle or phone maker’s support. Sony also advises resetting a compatible stereo when stored pairing settings may be interfering.
Saved credentials can be lost, so a previously working phone may need to be paired again. These general steps cannot guarantee compatibility between every phone and an older head unit; the exact vehicle manual takes priority.
How to add Bluetooth to an older car
First check the factory radio for an AUX input, then consider whether you want to keep that radio or replace it. The options below solve different problems; none is universal.

- Compatibility: Verify the exact vehicle year, make, model, trim, factory radio, and audio package. A Bluetooth label on an accessory does not establish that it will work with a particular stereo.
- What you need: Decide whether you need music streaming, hands-free calls, or both. Confirm that the chosen route supports the function you want.
- Connection and convenience: An AUX receiver uses the radio’s AUX input; an FM transmitter depends on a usable broadcast frequency. An integrated adapter or replacement receiver may offer a different day-to-day experience, but check its specific features rather than assuming them.
- Installation and factory features: An AUX receiver or transmitter may avoid replacing the radio, while an adapter or new stereo can involve more installation work. Determine whether the original stereo and vehicle controls will remain usable.
- Power and availability: Check how an add-on is powered and whether the car has the required input or a usable FM radio.
What to check before replacing a newer car’s stereo
In some newer cars, audio controls share a screen or system with climate settings and other vehicle functions. Replacing the stereo can therefore involve more than matching the opening in the dashboard. Crutchfield’s installation guidance notes that vehicle-specific mounting kits and wiring adapters may be needed to retain useful factory features.
Before selecting hardware, confirm fitment for the exact year, make, model, trim, and factory audio package. Check whether the car has a factory amplifier, steering-wheel controls, or other integrated functions that matter to you, and verify how the proposed installation will handle them.
