Google’s policy against back-button hijacking took effect on June 15, 2026. A website that deceptively interferes with browser navigation—so visitors cannot use Back to return directly to the page they came from—may face a manual spam action or an automated demotion in Google Search. The policy does not mean that every use of browser history is prohibited, and Google has not published an estimate of how many sites will be affected or how large any ranking impact could be.

What is back-button hijacking?

Back-button hijacking is deceptive interference with browser navigation that prevents a visitor from using the Back button to return immediately to the page they came from. Google describes examples such as sending someone to pages they never visited, showing unsolicited recommendations or ads, or otherwise preventing normal browsing. Its spam-policy documentation identifies manipulation of browser history or other browser functionality as a way this interference can occur.

The expectation is simple: when a visitor clicks Back, they should be able to return to the prior page without a deceptive detour. Google characterizes the practice as one that breaks the expected user journey and frustrates visitors.

When did Google’s policy take effect?

Google Search Central announced the new malicious-practices spam-policy violation on April 13, 2026, and set June 15, 2026, as the enforcement start date. That date has passed. The current Google Search spam policies also describe manipulation of browser history or other functionality as a prohibited practice when it creates the deceptive interference described above.

Can Google penalize a site for hijacking the browser Back button?

Yes. Google says pages engaging in back-button hijacking may receive a manual spam action or an automated demotion that affects their performance in Google Search. This is a possible consequence, not a guarantee that every offending site will be treated the same way. Google has not specified how frequently it will take either kind of action, how its systems detect the behavior, or the ranking loss a site might experience.

Does the policy ban ordinary browser-history use?

No blanket ban on browser-history APIs or history-based navigation is established by Google’s published guidance. The concern is deceptive interference that prevents a visitor from returning normally to the page they came from. Google’s materials do not provide a detailed safe-harbor list for single-page applications or other ordinary navigation patterns, so evaluate the behavior users actually encounter rather than assuming that any history entry is a violation.

How should site owners find and fix the cause?

Start by testing the visitor experience: open a page from another site or page on your own site, then use the browser’s Back button. If the visitor is diverted to an unrequested page, shown an unsolicited ad or recommendation, or otherwise blocked from returning directly, investigate the implementation that changes or intercepts navigation.

Google advises site owners to review the full implementation, not just code they wrote themselves. A third-party library or advertising-platform script or configuration may be involved. Google does not identify a particular vendor or script as the cause.

  1. Reproduce the behavior. Test the relevant pages and flows in a browser, including the path by which a visitor arrives, and confirm whether Back returns directly to the referring page.
  2. Inspect the complete implementation. Review first-party code, imported libraries, and advertising-platform code and configurations for behavior that manipulates browser history or obstructs navigation.
  3. Remove or disable the cause. Change the script, import, or configuration responsible for the deceptive detour, then test the same visitor journey again.
  4. Address a manual action if one was issued. After fixing the problem, the site owner can submit a reconsideration request through Google Search Console. Google does not promise a particular review time or ranking recovery.

What changed for AdSense vignette ads?

In a separate notice published May 7, 2026, Google said that from June 15, 2026, pressing the browser Back button would no longer trigger a vignette ad for publishers who had enabled “Allow additional triggers for vignette ads.” Google said the removal would apply automatically across supported browsers, including Chrome, Edge, and Opera, so publishers did not need to take action for that trigger change. This is a specific change to one AdSense trigger; it does not establish that ads generally are prohibited or that this trigger was the only possible source of back-button interference.
