Games can make you root for a morally compromised protagonist by aligning your immediate goals with theirs, keeping you in direct control, and revealing motives that complicate your first judgment. That can invite sympathy without earning moral approval. Some games then make the discomfort sharper by showing the cost of your actions or letting you play from an opponent’s perspective.

What is the difference between an antihero and a villain protagonist?

An antihero is a central protagonist who lacks conventional heroic virtues. A villain protagonist is a central viewpoint character whose goals or conduct put them in opposition to the moral or social order presented by the story. These are useful working distinctions, not fixed categories: the label can shift with the viewpoint and with what the player knows.

A protagonist’s central role does not make them a hero. Henrik Andergard’s analysis of Spec Ops: The Line examines how it subverts the military-hero narrative, while Ferrari and Soraci describe Abby in The Last of Us Part II as first introduced as a villain before the game gives players her perspective. Andergard’s analysis and Ferrari and Soraci’s paper illustrate how a character’s role can depend on whose story the player is experiencing.

Three reactions are worth keeping separate: understanding a character’s motives, feeling sympathy for them, and approving of what they do. A game may prompt the first or second without producing the third.

Why do I root for a villain in a game?

Often, the game makes the character’s immediate goal your immediate task. You may be trying to survive, reach a location, or protect someone before you have considered the larger moral picture. That moment-to-moment alignment can draw you into the character’s pursuit without requiring you to endorse it.

Control makes actions feel personal

Directly performing an action can feel different from watching it in a cutscene. Game-studies writing on Spec Ops: The Line connects player control with the desire to keep an avatar alive and with a sense of responsibility for what happens. The player is not necessarily free to choose every outcome, but they have still been present at the controls. The analysis of player complicity and responsibility discusses this relationship.

Motives can complicate an initial judgment

Access to a character’s experiences and relationships can make their actions more intelligible. That does not make harmful conduct harmless; it gives the player more context with which to judge it. As Game Developer’s interview with Spec Ops: The Line lead designer Cory Davis explains, the team wanted to tell a specific story about specific characters and put players in control for moments that games might otherwise present as cutscenes. These are statements of design intent, not evidence that every player responded in the same way. Read the interview with Davis.

How do games make players feel responsible for a character’s actions?

Responsibility in games is not only about choosing between clearly labeled moral options. A game can constrain the available actions, leave a choice ambiguous, show consequences, or make continuing to play part of the ethical question.

Spec Ops: The Line uses familiar military-shooter expectations as a setup, then challenges the player’s assumptions through disturbing actions, constrained choices, and consequences. Narrative designer Richard Pearsey wrote that the team wanted gameplay and combat to inform character and story alongside dialogue and cutscenes. Pearsey’s development account describes that aim.

Lead writer Walt Williams argued that the story continues toward chaos despite some major explicit choices. In an interview with Ars Technica, he said: “The concept we currently have of player agency [in most video games] is that since I’m the player and I’m the hero and this world revolves around me, it has to react however I want it to react.” The distinction is important: having control over an action is not the same as controlling the story’s outcome, and a game does not have to validate a player’s preferred heroic role to make the player confront their involvement. A 2024 study discusses Spec Ops: The Line’s “stop sign” framing as a meta-choice: responsibility is placed on the person playing, rather than only on the playable character. Wright and Denisova’s study explores how such a framing can make refusal, continuation, and constrained choice part of the experience.

How can a perspective switch make you empathize with an antagonist?

Instead of asking players only to question their complicity in one protagonist’s actions, a game can hand them control of someone they have been encouraged to oppose. The Last of Us Part II shifts from Ellie to Abby after Abby kills Joel, then spends a substantial section of the game with Abby. Ferrari and Soraci describe the structure as an attempt to create empathy for a character initially introduced as a villain. The game invites reconsideration; it cannot guarantee sympathy or approval. Ferrari and Soraci’s 2022 analysis examines that viewpoint shift.

The creators’ intention and players’ reactions are not the same thing. In their analysis of six highly viewed commented gameplay videos, Ferrari and Soraci found that five of the six observed players expressed dissent with the climactic attempt to make them harm Ellie. This is a small, selected sample of videos—not a representative survey or an estimate of how players generally feel.

How to compare games that ask you to root for a compromised protagonist

These questions help distinguish how a game constructs allegiance from whether you personally feel it:

  • Player control: Do you perform the protagonist’s actions directly, or mainly observe them?
  • Choice structure: Are moral choices explicit, constrained, ambiguous, or implied by continuing to play?
  • Consequences: Does the game show who is harmed and how, or leave the effects abstract?
  • Viewpoint: Does the story stay with one protagonist, or give you substantial control of an opposing character?
  • Player refusal: Can you choose a different outcome, refuse an action, or stop playing? What does the game communicate through that limit?
  • Moral framing: Does the story endorse the protagonist, criticize them, or leave room for conflicting readings?

The questions draw on discussions of control and complicity in Spec Ops: The Line, the perspective shift in The Last of Us Part II, and the meta-choice framing examined in the 2024 study.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say

The cited work offers ways to analyze how games invite allegiance, responsibility, or empathy; it does not establish how often players root for villain protagonists across games. Ferrari and Soraci’s five-of-six result applies only to players in six selected commented gameplay videos and their reactions to one particular climax. It should not be generalized to all players, or treated as proof that a viewpoint shift succeeds or fails for everyone.

So if you find yourself rooting for a villain, it may be because the game has aligned your short-term goals with theirs, made you an active participant, or given you reasons to reconsider who they are. None of those techniques requires you to conclude that the character is right.
