The ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000 is the strongest all-around pick in this five-router shortlist for households that want broad parental controls without a recurring control subscription. Choose the ASUS ZenWiFi BT10 instead when mesh coverage matters, the GL.iNet Flint 3 or Flint 2 for more configurable subscription-free controls, or the TP-Link Archer BE230 for a lower-cost starting point with a more limited free tier.

These recommendations reflect RTINGS’ model comparisons, not a claim that one router will suit every household. The right choice depends on home layout, whether you need app or website controls, which features are free, and how much configuration you are willing to manage.

How the five routers compare

Router Best fit Controls highlighted Important limitation Wireless and wired details
ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000 Most households seeking broad controls without a recurring control fee One-click adult-content filters, app blocking, scheduled quiet hours No daily usage allowance; large gaming-router design may not suit every room or budget Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 standalone router; compatible ASUS mesh expansion; seven 2.5Gbps LAN ports
ASUS ZenWiFi BT10 Larger or multi-story homes needing mesh coverage Adult-content filtering, restrictions for distracting apps, scheduled downtime across the mesh; no subscription No daily usage allowance Mesh system; each node has two 10Gbps ports, so wired backhaul can leave one LAN port per node for a device
GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300) Mid-range buyers who want configurable controls Website blocking, scheduled downtime, network-wide ad and tracker blocking; no subscription OpenWrt-based interface has a learning curve; ad-blocking settings may interfere with parental website restrictions Wi-Fi 7 standalone router
GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) Lower-cost option when Wi-Fi 6 is enough Website blocking, scheduled downtime, ad and tracker filtering; no subscription No daily usage allowance; less mainstream simplicity than some alternatives Wi-Fi 6 standalone router
TP-Link Archer BE230 Budget buyers who need basic scheduling and blocking Free tier includes child profiles, access pause, specific-site blocking and bedtime App blocking, daily time limits, detailed reports and separate weekday/weekend bedtime schedules require a paid subscription Standalone router; the cited comparison does not state a port count

RTINGS says its reviewers have tested over 60 routers since beginning reviews in 2024 and that it buys the products it tests. That describes its testing program, not a measure of how effectively these routers protect children. Its ranking weighs test results, typical pricing, community feedback and which features are available without a subscription. See RTINGS’ parental-control router comparison.

Which router best matches your household?

ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000: broad controls without a recurring control fee

Choose the GS-BE18000 if you want app blocking, adult-content filtering and scheduled quiet hours, and a standalone router fits your home. Its seven 2.5Gbps LAN ports also make it worth considering if you have several wired devices. It does not provide a daily usage allowance, so families who want to cap each child’s total daily online time should look elsewhere. Its gaming-focused size and styling are also worth considering before placing it in a shared living space.

ASUS ZenWiFi BT10: mesh for a larger or multi-story home

The BT10 is the clearest fit when one router is unlikely to cover the whole home reliably. Its parental controls work across the mesh and, according to RTINGS, do not require a subscription. Each node has two 10Gbps ports; if one is used for wired backhaul, one remains for a device. Like the GS-BE18000, it does not offer a daily usage allowance.

GL.iNet Flint 3: configurable Wi-Fi 7 controls

The Flint 3 offers website blocking, scheduled downtime and network-wide ad and tracker blocking without a subscription. Its OpenWrt-based web interface provides more configuration than a simpler app-led setup, but expect a learning curve. Be cautious when combining ad blocking with parental website restrictions: RTINGS notes that ad-blocking settings may interfere with those restrictions.

  • A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
  • Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.

  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.

GL.iNet Flint 2: lower-cost controls on Wi-Fi 6

If Wi-Fi 6 is sufficient, the Flint 2 offers subscription-free website blocking, scheduled downtime and ad and tracker filtering. Its OpenWrt-based interface favors configurability over mainstream simplicity, and it does not include a daily usage allowance. It is a sensible candidate when those trade-offs matter less than avoiding a recurring fee.

TP-Link Archer BE230: basic controls with a paid-feature boundary

The BE230’s free tier covers child profiles, pausing access, blocking specific sites and bedtime scheduling. It may be enough if those are the controls you need. However, app blocking, daily time limits, detailed reports and separate weekday and weekend bedtime schedules are paid features, so check the current HomeShield terms before buying if any of them are essential. TP-Link’s HomeShield guide explains profiles, filters, schedules and subscription-dependent options.

How to choose: coverage, controls and setup

  • Start with coverage. A standalone router can suit a compact layout; a mesh system is a better candidate when a large or multi-story home has dead zones. Mesh does not automatically make parental controls more capable, but it can extend the network-wide rules across more of the home.
  • Decide whether you need schedules or time limits. A bedtime or downtime schedule controls when access is available. A daily allowance limits total use. The ASUS and GL.iNet models listed here provide scheduled downtime but lack a daily usage allowance; the BE230 reserves daily time limits for its paid tier.
  • Match the filter to the behavior you want to manage. App blocking, website blocking and adult-content filtering are distinct controls. Do not assume that a router offering one also offers the others, or that a website rule can be applied to only one device.
  • Compare the actual free tier. “Parental controls included” does not mean every feature is free. Confirm whether the specific controls you intend to use require a subscription, trial or supported firmware.
  • Balance simplicity against configuration depth. ASUS and TP-Link offer more familiar app-centered management; the GL.iNet choices expose OpenWrt-based settings that can be more flexible but less straightforward to configure.
  • Consider wireless and wired needs together. Wi-Fi 7’s potential benefits require compatible client devices, and advertised maximum speeds do not predict real-world household performance. Count wired devices and account for any port used by mesh backhaul.

For a broader explanation of coverage, Wi-Fi generations and real-world speed expectations, see Tom’s Guide’s router buying guide. Its measured throughput for the Archer BE770 is not evidence about that router’s parental-control quality.

Check compatibility and control limits before buying

Verify the exact model, region and software

Features can vary by model, hardware revision, region, firmware and app version. ASUS says some functions, including online schedules and Reward Time, depend on the model, and recommends checking specifications and updating firmware and the app. NETGEAR also limits Smart Parental Controls to specified products, with availability varying by country; its support documentation says first-time setup starts a 30-day trial. Check the router operating mode

ASUS parental controls are available in router mode; ASUS says they may not appear in access-point mode. This matters if you plan to keep a separate primary router and use the ASUS device only to add Wi-Fi coverage.

Know the device-specific website-blocking limitation

ASUS states: “ASUS routers currently do not support website blocking on specific devices(e.g. phone, laptop).” In practical terms, do not buy one expecting to block a particular website on one child’s device while allowing it on others. Check the vendor’s current documentation if device-specific rules are essential.

Review subscriptions on competing systems

Subscription boundaries differ across products and can change. TP-Link’s documentation marks several advanced HomeShield options as subscription-dependent, and some functions require supported firmware. For eero, a recent Pro 7 review says some parental-control features are behind eero Plus; that review does not establish the subscription boundary for every eero model or plan. Check the exact model and current plan terms rather than assuming one product’s rules apply to the entire brand. TechRadar’s eero Pro 7 review.
