The flow is: create invoice HTML, send it to Cloudflare Browser Run’s /pdf endpoint through a Worker binding, then return the generated PDF bytes as the HTTP response. This avoids an R2 object write; it does not guarantee that no client, intermediary, log, or other service retains a copy.
How the invoice-to-PDF flow works
- Build the invoice as HTML and CSS. Include your logo, business name, invoice number and dates, customer details, itemized charges, tax, total, and payment instructions.
- Render it with Browser Run. Cloudflare’s Browser Run
/pdfendpoint generates a PDF from a webpage or custom HTML. Cloudflare documents calling the endpoint from a Worker using Browser Run bindings. See Cloudflare Browser Run PDF documentation. - Return the generated bytes. Use the PDF payload as the Worker’s HTTP response body, with response metadata appropriate for a PDF download.
- Skip the R2 write. If you do not want persistent object storage for the generated file, do not call the R2 object-write API. R2 is an optional storage path, not a required part of direct PDF delivery. See Cloudflare’s R2 Workers API documentation.
Choose custom HTML or an existing webpage
Browser Run’s PDF endpoint can render either a webpage or custom HTML. Custom HTML gives the Worker direct control over the invoice markup and makes it easier to generate document content from request data. Rendering an existing webpage can make sense if the invoice already exists as a page, but the rendering endpoint alone does not supply or validate a complete invoice template.
Keep invoice calculations and validation in your application rather than relying on visual layout. Confirm that line items, tax rules, currency, and totals are correct before rendering; the PDF step turns the supplied page content into a document.
Add branding, headers, and page numbers
Apply the business identity in the invoice HTML and CSS: logo, colors, typography, spacing, and clear hierarchy for invoice details and totals. Cloudflare’s PDF example also demonstrates PDF options for an A5 page, a branded header, a footer message, and page numbering. These are rendering options, not a ready-made branded invoice design; adapt them to your document and verify the result with your actual invoice content. See the Browser Run PDF example.

Test invoices with long descriptions and enough line items to span multiple pages. Check that totals, payment instructions, and page numbers remain readable and do not overlap headers or footers.
Return a PDF without an R2 object write
The key design distinction is between where a response goes and whether your application persists an object. A Worker can pass the generated PDF payload back in its HTTP response without writing those bytes to R2. Set response headers suitable for a PDF and, if the client should download it, use a download-oriented content disposition. The reviewed Cloudflare rendering documentation does not prescribe exact response-header values, so choose and test them for your application and clients.

“Not stored in R2” is a precise claim about your application’s storage behavior, not an end-to-end promise that no copy exists. The receiving client necessarily gets the response, and browser caches, proxies, observability systems, or other downstream services may handle data according to their own behavior. The reviewed documentation does not establish an application-wide retention policy or cache directives. If invoices contain confidential information, separately review and configure caching, logging, and downstream handling.

Cloudflare’s Workers Limits page, last updated September 5, 2026, lists 128 MB of memory, CPU time of 10 ms on the Free plan and 5 minutes on the Paid plan, and no enforced limit for HTTP response-body size. These platform limits do not guarantee that a particular PDF render will complete: rendering still has to fit the applicable CPU and memory budget. Check Cloudflare’s Workers Limits documentation for current plan limits before deployment.

Document complexity can affect the resources needed. Measure representative invoices with your selected HTML, fonts, images, and page count in the target Worker plan. A response-body size limit is not the same thing as unlimited rendering capacity.
Cloudflare recommends streaming request and response bodies to reduce memory pressure and cautions against holding large payloads in memory. For larger documents, avoid unnecessary buffering where your implementation allows it, and test the complete request-to-response path under realistic load. Implementation checklist
- Configure the documented Browser Run binding for the Worker and call the PDF endpoint with either custom invoice HTML or the URL of an invoice page.
- Validate invoice data and totals before rendering; do not treat PDF generation as a substitute for accounting logic.
- Set response metadata so clients handle the returned payload as a PDF, and test both inline viewing and download behavior if your application supports them.
- Do not invoke an R2 object-write operation if avoiding an R2 copy is a requirement.
- Test realistic document lengths and assets against the selected plan’s CPU and memory limits.
- Review caching, logs, and downstream services separately if invoice confidentiality or retention matters.
