It is a better fit for occasional travel, field, student, or small-space printing than for a busy office: it has no scanner, prints one side at a time, holds only 50 sheets, and independent testing found slow output and low ink yields.
What is the Canon PIXMA TR160?
The TR160 is a compact wireless inkjet for printing documents and photos. It weighs about 2.1 kg (4.5 lb) without its optional battery, according to Canon’s March 28, 2025 announcement. It accepts full-size Letter and Legal paper as well as several photo sizes, giving it more flexibility than a printer limited to small-format prints.
It is strictly a printer: there is no scanner or copier. If you need to digitize paperwork, you will need a separate scanner or an all-in-one printer.
How well does it print?
Documents and speed
Canon lists speeds of 9.0 images per minute (ipm) for black and 5.5 ipm for color on Letter documents using its ESAT test method. Those manufacturer figures describe a standardized test, not every real-world job. RTINGS’ independent review, with a test-bench update dated September 25, 2026, characterizes the TR160 as slow, particularly for office use. It found documents sharp, but the printer is not a good match for frequent, high-volume printing.

Photos
The TR160 supports borderless photo printing up to 8.5 × 11 inches. Canon lists approximately 53 seconds for a borderless 4 × 6-inch photo on its PP-201 paper; this is a manufacturer specification. Digital Camera World reviewer Matthew Richards praised the “richness and detail in dark shadowy areas” and “lifelike color rendition” of glossy prints (Digital Camera World’s portable printer guide). RTINGS likewise found detailed photo output, making this model more appealing to photo-minded users than to people prioritizing document speed.
Canon says its ChromaLife100 prints can last up to 100 years in an album, 30 years behind glass, or 20 years without glass. These are Canon’s longevity claims, not independent lifetime test results.

What are the paper and connectivity options?
The rear tray holds up to 50 sheets of plain paper. Supported media include Letter and Legal paper, envelopes, multiple photo sizes, and Canon photo papers such as Photo Paper Plus Glossy II. There is no internal paper cassette, so you must carry paper separately when travelling.
For connections, Canon lists Hi-Speed USB and dual-band 2.4 GHz/5 GHz Wi-Fi, plus wireless direct connection. Mobile printing support includes Apple AirPrint, Canon PRINT, and Mopria. You can therefore print over USB without relying on a Wi-Fi network, or use a supported wireless or mobile-printing route. Digital Camera World notes that the printer lacks Bluetooth and NFC.

Does the TR160 come with a battery?
In Canon’s US standard configuration, the battery is optional, not included. The compatible accessory is the LK-72 battery pack. Canon’s March 28, 2025 launch release estimated approximately 330 pages per charge, but that figure came from a specific test: a fully charged new battery printing ISO/IEC 24712 color test files continuously on Letter plain paper in Standard mode, by USB without Wi-Fi. It should not be treated as a typical result for all jobs or wireless use.
The battery is useful when printing away from an outlet, but it adds an accessory to buy and carry. Canon’s launch-era estimated retail prices were $249.99 for the printer and $99.99 for the battery; these are dated estimates, not current offers. Current pricing, stock, and regional bundle contents may differ.

What ink does the Canon TR160 use, and how much will it print?
The printer uses two tanks: PGI-35 pigment black and CLI-36 dye color. RTINGS’ page-yield assessment describes cartridges lasting about 200 pages, with frequent replacement as a drawback. That is an independent assessment, not a guaranteed yield; actual results vary with the amount and type of content printed. Low cartridge yield makes the TR160 less attractive for regular document workloads than for occasional jobs.

RTINGS describes the TR160 as nearly identical to the older TR150, with Wi-Fi 5 support and enhanced wireless security as the new-model differences. It also identifies the Epson WorkForce WF-110 as a similarly performing portable competitor and the HP OfficeJet 250 as an alternative that adds scanning and stronger document performance. In RTINGS’ comparison, Canon is the more photo-oriented choice.

When comparing portable printers, consider more than body size: document speed and quality, photo output, scanning, battery options, wired connectivity, tray capacity, weight, and ink costs all affect whether a printer will suit your routine. The TR160’s full-size paper support and photo capability are useful, but its lack of a scanner, modest tray, slow output, and low-yield cartridges limit its appeal as a main office machine.
Is the Canon PIXMA TR160 worth it?
Choose the TR160 if you need a portable printer for occasional Letter-size documents or glossy photos and value USB, Wi-Fi, and an optional battery. Skip it if you need scanning, automatic two-sided printing, high throughput, or economical printing at volume. For a portable all-in-one, the HP OfficeJet 250 is worth comparing; for a similarly portable printer, RTINGS names the Epson WorkForce WF-110 as another option.
