Aleph One is an open-source continuation of Bungie’s Marathon 2 game engine, extended to run the Marathon trilogy and community-made scenarios on modern desktop systems. It is an engine, not a single game: to play, you install Aleph One and provide a scenario’s game data files. The official download page displays version 1.11, released August 29, 2025.
What Aleph One is—and what it is not
The Aleph One project describes the software as the open-source continuation of Bungie’s Marathon 2 engine; its source repository also calls it a continuation of the Marathon Infinity engine. The project extends that engine for current computers and community content. Bungie is not identified as the current developer: Aleph One is a separate community project, and its repository publishes the software under the GPL-3 license. See the Aleph One project site and its source repository.
The distinction between engine and game matters. Aleph One supplies the software that runs a scenario, while the scenario supplies the game content—such as levels and campaign data. The project offers the original Marathon trilogy as downloadable scenarios, alongside a catalogue of third-party campaigns and conversions. You therefore choose both the engine and the scenario you want to play.
How to get Aleph One and start playing
The official download page lists macOS, Windows, and Linux Flatpak instructions. It displays Aleph One 1.11 with a release date of 2025-08-29; that is the version shown on the page, not independent confirmation that no later build exists. The normal player setup uses downloadable binaries and scenario files. The repository’s instructions for compiling from source are for developers, not a prerequisite for playing.
#1 Best Overall
- A TEAM SPORT, NOT A TOSS GAME. Two teams play at the same time. One side attacks the pole, the other defends and intercepts. First to eleven, win by two.
- OFFENSE AND DEFENSE, LIVE. Passing, interceptions, turnovers, rebounds and penalty shots. Possession changes constantly, so the game moves instead of taking turns.
- BUILT FOR FOUR TO TEN. Flexible team sizes from two-a-side to five-a-side. Best with six or more.
- MOST GROUPS LEARN IT AS THEY PLAY. Rules take about two minutes. Because the format is new, the skill gap is much shorter than in an established sport.
- SETUP IS ABOUT THREE MINUTES, ANY FLAT SURFACE. Grass, turf, sand or gym, with no out-of-bounds. Collapsible pole, penalty zone, sport disc and carry bag. Replacement parts available.
- Choose a scenario. Start with Marathon, Marathon 2, or Marathon Infinity from the project’s trilogy downloads, or select a community scenario from the scenario catalogue.
- Download Aleph One for your operating system. Follow the matching macOS, Windows, or Linux Flatpak instructions on the official download page.
- Put the engine and scenario together as instructed for your platform. On macOS, the project says to place Aleph One in the scenario folder and launch the application. On Windows, place
Aleph One.exein that folder and launch it. For Linux Flatpak, install the package, download and unpack the scenario, then launch the engine with that scenario directory. - Launch the scenario. If you have the engine but no scenario data, you have the runtime without a campaign to play; download and unpack the game data before launching.
The project’s download routes are digital; the reviewed instructions do not identify a physical product or special peripheral as necessary. Platform-specific developer dependencies such as Xcode, Visual Studio, or Linux build libraries apply to compiling Aleph One from source, not to the ordinary player setup.
Which Marathon scenario should you choose?
The original trilogy is the clearest starting point. The project’s descriptions distinguish the games by campaign, visual presentation, and the scenario’s relationship to community-made maps.

Community-made scenarios extend the games
The official catalogue includes conversions and campaigns such as Trojan, EVIL, Tempus Irae Redux, RED, Eternal, Rubicon X, Phoenix, Yuge, Apotheosis X, and Istoria. The project describes Trojan as 25 levels, Eternal as 52 levels, and Phoenix as a 35-level single-player conversion. Those counts and descriptions are the project’s own; the catalogue is a way to discover content, not a guarantee that each scenario is equally maintained or compatible with every engine release. Check the individual scenario details before choosing one.

Playing with other people
Aleph One’s official site describes peer-to-peer multiplayer for up to eight players. It supports LAN matches, while Internet play depends on the host being configured correctly. The project points players to a global matchmaking lobby and says Marathon Infinity is the usual choice for online matches. The eight-player figure is the project’s published capacity, not a result of independent testing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “continuation” means here
Aleph One continues the Marathon 2 engine in the sense that an open-source project has carried the engine forward for modern desktop platforms and additional community content. It does not mean that Bungie is maintaining or publishing Aleph One. The original game’s era-specific hardware requirements should not be used as current Aleph One recommendations: the project’s modern download instructions are the relevant starting point for today’s players.
