A March 2026 report said the company was developing an AI-focused phone under that codename, but Amazon’s devices chief later publicly downplayed a phone as the company’s goal. The project’s current internal status and whether a handset will ever be released remain unknown.
What is Amazon Transformer?
Transformer is the codename for a smartphone project described in a March 20, 2026 report based on Reuters’ sources. Ars Technica said the account relied on four anonymous people familiar with the matter. Amazon declined to comment to Ars, and the sources said the project could be cancelled for financial or strategic reasons. That makes Transformer a reported project, not an announced or confirmed retail phone. Ars Technica’s report
TechCrunch reported that the effort was associated with ZeroOne, a relatively new unit within Amazon Devices and Services, and J Allard, a former Microsoft executive. Those details, too, come from the initial reporting rather than a public Amazon announcement. TechCrunch’s account
What did Amazon say about the phone rumors?
On May 13, 2026, Amazon Devices and Services chief Panos Panay addressed the rumors in a Financial Times interview, as quoted by Tom’s Guide. He said, “It’s just not the goal. I know there’s a lot of rumors out there,” and, “There’s no clear path that makes sense.” He added, “There’s always opportunity, but right now, no.” Tom’s Guide’s report

Panay’s comments publicly downplayed a phone as Amazon’s goal at that time, but they do not establish whether an internal Transformer effort continued or was cancelled. The public information therefore supports neither a definite launch nor a definitive claim that the project is over.
What would Amazon’s phone do?
The reported concept centered on AI integration and closer access to Amazon services. The initial accounts described possible Alexa support and personalized access to shopping and media, as well as services such as Grubhub. These were reported ideas, not confirmed features or a final product plan. Ars Technica and TechCrunch

Ars Technica’s account also described the possibility of AI taking the place of a traditional app store. The reporting did not establish how that would work, which operating system the device might use, or whether this idea would be part of any released phone. It is best understood as a reported product direction, not a settled design.
What is still unknown about Transformer?
The available reports do not establish whether the project is currently active. Amazon has not publicly confirmed a retail name, announcement, release date, price, hardware specifications, operating system, carrier arrangements, or final features. Reuters’ sources, as described by Ars Technica, also did not establish price, investment, or expected revenue. Ars Technica

There are no confirmed Transformer models or purchasing options to compare, and no specifications to support advice about cases, chargers, or compatibility. A release prediction or buying recommendation would go beyond what has been reported.
How does the reported idea differ from a typical smartphone?
The reporting leaves key design decisions open. These distinctions describe possibilities raised in the reports, not confirmed choices Amazon made:

Is Transformer another Fire Phone?
The Fire Phone is relevant as Amazon’s historical smartphone attempt, but it does not confirm what Transformer would be or predict its outcome. Tom’s Guide reported a Fire Phone sales figure of 140,000 units; that is a secondary-source figure, not an original sales disclosure included in the reporting reviewed here. Tom’s Guide
The Fire Phone is discontinued, so it is not a substitute for a possible new handset or a reliable basis for accessory-compatibility advice. Transformer has no confirmed specifications or availability to assess.
