Brix Networks’ move into enterprise monitoring extended its carrier-focused IP service assurance to customer premises. Its Verifier probes and BrixWorx software were designed to help service providers measure service quality, verify SLAs and identify whether a fault sat in the provider network or the enterprise network. This is a historical account: EXFO purchased Brix Networks in April 2008, and the available sources do not establish whether the legacy products remain available or supported.

What Brix Networks offered enterprise customers

Brix Networks developed IP application and network performance testing systems for Tier 1 and Tier 2 carriers and large enterprises, according to its company profile. The profile describes a system built around active-testing and passive-monitoring probes called Verifiers, managed by a central software platform called BrixWorx. This is the company profile’s description, rather than an independent audit of the product line.

Enterprise service assurance meant extending measurement beyond a provider’s own network. A service provider could place a Verifier at an enterprise customer site and monitor performance closer to where the service was actually used. That extra vantage point could help operators distinguish a provider-side issue from one within the customer’s network, rather than treating every service complaint as a problem in the same place.

How the monitoring system was intended to work

Verifiers collected network and service measurements

EXFO’s 2008 BrixNGN brochure describes Verifiers deployed at strategic points from the network core toward the provider edge and customer endpoints. The probes supported active simulated tests as well as passive monitoring, giving operators ways to examine performance across a service path. The brochure presents this as coverage for converged services including VoIP, IP video, enterprise connectivity, mobile backhaul and metro Ethernet.

BrixWorx organized tests and reporting

The same BrixNGN brochure describes BrixWorx as the software engine for operating the system. It could set and verify service objectives, schedule simulated tests and live monitoring, configure Verifiers, correlate information for troubleshooting and produce performance reports. The brochure also describes interfaces to OSS/BSS systems through APIs.

For an enterprise account, EXFO’s BrixCall brochure says BrixWorx could define metrics, warning thresholds and monitoring schedules, verify SLAs and share results with enterprise customers. These are vendor-described functions, not independently measured outcomes.

Why placing probes at enterprise sites mattered

A provider observing only its own core or edge might see a service degrade without having enough evidence to locate the cause. A probe at an enterprise site added a measurement point nearer the endpoint. Comparing observations along the service path could help operations teams narrow down whether performance trouble appeared within the provider network or on the customer side, and could support validation when a service was installed or turned up.

That model made service assurance useful both operationally and contractually: measurements and thresholds could be used to monitor service objectives and report SLA performance. The brochures explain the intended workflow, but they do not publish independent evidence that Brix deployments reduced outages, improved performance by a specified amount or shortened repair times.

A 2007 example: testing VoIP endpoints

On April 30, 2007, InnoMedia announced that Brix had integrated its service-assurance technology with several InnoMedia VoIP devices, including MTAs and EMTAs used in residential and enterprise markets. The announcement describes automated SIP media loopback tests across a network, a group of subscribers or an individual subscriber. The system collected and analyzed results to support troubleshooting, with outputs including mean opinion score (MOS), latency, jitter and packet loss.

These were measures the system could produce, not published results from a named customer deployment. Bob Travis, then Brix Networks’ director of solutions marketing, said the integration allowed cable operators to conduct “ongoing, non-intrusive performance monitoring tests.” InnoMedia’s Shailesh Patel, then senior director of product management, emphasized the importance of last-mile quality for carriers and cable operators serving residential and enterprise customers. Both comments are statements from the companies involved, not independent evaluations.

How the company’s direction changed—and what is known now

A Miller Systems release positioned Brix as a VoIP performance-management and service-assurance provider serving carriers, service providers, cable companies, large enterprises and government agencies. It quoted Brix president and CEO Tom Pincince describing an “ongoing evolution” in the VoIP management market. The opened release does not show a publication date, so its positioning is best read as a historical company statement rather than a dated account of a particular product release.

Brix Networks’ profile says EXFO purchased the company in April 2008. EXFO’s ©2008 BrixNGN brochure documents the product line after that acquisition. The historical material establishes what Brix products were designed to do; it does not establish present-day availability, support status or continuity under a current product name.
