The Keychron Thunderbolt 5 Dock (TB5D-1) is a well-equipped one-cable hub for a laptop desk: it combines two HDMI 2.1 outputs, two downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports, five USB-A ports, 2.5GbE Ethernet, and UHS-II card readers. Its appeal is the mix of familiar display connections and high-speed expansion—not a promise that every laptop can drive two 8K monitors. Keychron’s display and charging figures are specifications, while the SSD speeds discussed below come from Tom’s Hardware’s particular test setup.

What the Keychron Thunderbolt 5 Dock offers

Keychron calls the TB5D-1 a 14-in-1 Thunderbolt 5 dock. Its stated bandwidth is up to 80Gbps bidirectional, with a boost of up to 120Gbps for video-focused use. The connection layout covers displays, wired networking, storage, peripherals, audio, and memory cards in one desktop hub.

Connection or feature Keychron’s listed provision
Thunderbolt 5 Three ports: one upstream connection to the host and two downstream ports
HDMI Two HDMI 2.1 outputs
USB-A Five ports, each listed at up to 10Gbps
USB-C One front USB-C port listed at 10Gbps in Tom’s Hardware’s layout
Memory cards UHS-II SD and microSD slots, per Tom’s Hardware’s layout
Networking 2.5Gbps Ethernet
Audio Front combo audio jack, per Tom’s Hardware’s layout
Power Up to 140W to the host; downstream TB5 charging listed at 30W and 15W; included 180W adapter

The front/rear breakdown above comes from Tom’s Hardware’s comparison table: the front carries the USB-C port, two USB-A ports, card slots, and audio jack; the rear carries the upstream and downstream Thunderbolt ports, two HDMI outputs, Ethernet, and the other two USB-A ports. Keychron describes a CNC-machined aluminum enclosure and passive, fanless cooling. The box includes a 180W power adapter, a 1m certified Thunderbolt 5 cable, and an IEC C7 power cable, according to Keychron’s product specifications.

Display support depends on the laptop, not just the dock

Keychron advertises dual 8K displays at 60Hz over a Thunderbolt 5 connection and says the dock can support up to four displays depending on the host. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that any connected computer can provide that output. The computer’s Thunderbolt or USB4 implementation, graphics hardware, operating system, and supported external-display limits all matter.

CalDigit TS5 Thunderbolt 5 Dock - 15 Port 240W PSU
  • 15 Ports of Connectivity - The TS5 includes 1x Host and 3x downstream 80Gb/s Thunderbolt 5 / USB4 V2 ports, 1x USB-A Gen 2 10Gb/s port, 1x USB-A 480Mb/s port, 3x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 10Gb/s ports, DisplayPort 2.1, SD 4.0 & microSD 4.0 UHS-II card readers, 2.5GbE, and 3x audio ports. Thunderbolt 5 supports 64Gb/s PCIe which is ideal for connecting ultra-fast Thunderbolt peripherals to the TS5.
  • More Power than Ever - The TS5 host charging port provides up to 140W power delivery. This makes it ideal for power hungry laptops such as the 16” M3/M4/M5 Pro and Max series MacBook Pro which charges at 140W. The TS5 includes a 240W power supply that allows the dock to provide sustained power delivery at all times, not only for the host charging port, but for all of the remaining ports. In addition to all of this power, the downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports offer 15W, and one of the front USB-C ports provides up to 20W of power delivery for charging accessories.
  • Flexible Display Configurations - The TS5 on macOS devices can connect up to Dual 6K 60Hz displays, or even Dual 8K 60Hz displays on Macs that support those resolutions. The TS5 supports high-refresh rates at up to Dual 4K 240Hz. On Windows, the TS5 supports up to dual 6K 60Hz on Thunderbolt 4 hosts, and up to Dual 8K 60Hz on Thunderbolt 5 hosts. Thunderbolt 5 Windows users can also connect up to Triple 4K 144Hz displays on supported Windows Thunderbolt 5 hosts (macOS does not support Triple displays).*Check with your manufacturer to see how many displays your computer supports.
  • PCIe Based 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet - The TS5 can integrate into 2.5GbE workflows with ease since it is 2.5x faster than traditional 1GbE found on the majority of docking stations. Users can connect to fast networks in order to transfer files quicker than ever and the 2.5GbE port is backwards compatible with 1GbE. *Ethernet is only supported on Thunderbolt based hosts as well as USB4 hosts that support PCIe.
  • Compatibility - To get the maximum performance out of the TS5, a Thunderbolt 5 (80Gb/s) or USB4 v2 (80Gb/s) host connection is required. Users on Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, or USB-C hosts will see reduced functionality. The TS5 also supports Thunderbolt and USB-C based tablet/phone devices.

Before buying, check the laptop manufacturer’s specifications for the number of external displays supported at the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use. A laptop that supports fewer displays, or that routes display output differently, will constrain the result even if the dock has the necessary ports. The dual-8K headline specifically applies to Thunderbolt 5; compatibility with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 does not mean those hosts provide Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth or the same display capabilities. Keychron’s compatibility and display notes make that host-dependence clear.

How much power does it deliver?

Keychron rates the upstream connection for up to 140W of host charging. That is the maximum listed for charging the connected laptop, not the output of each downstream port. The two downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports are listed separately at 30W and 15W. For full dock functionality, Keychron specifies use of the included 180W adapter.

The downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports and one of the front USB-C ports can provide up to 36W of dedicated power delivery for charging accessories, *Thunderbolt/USB-C port on host device must support PD for charging support (check with manufacturer). Desktop computers such as Mac Mini cannot be powered over USB-C and must use supplied AC adapter.
  • Flexible Display Configurations - The TS5 Plus on macOS devices can connect up to Dual 6K 60Hz displays, or even Dual 8K 60Hz displays on Macs that support those resolutions. The TS5 Plus supports high-refresh rates at up to Dual 4K 240Hz. On Windows, the TS5 Plus supports up to dual 6K 60Hz on Thunderbolt 4 hosts, and up to Dual 8K 60Hz on Thunderbolt 5 hosts. Thunderbolt 5 Windows users can also connect up to Triple 4K 144Hz displays on supported Windows Thunderbolt 5 hosts (macOS does not support Triple displays).*Check with your manufacturer to see how many displays your computer supports.
  • 10 Gigabit Ethernet - The TS5 Plus seamlessly integrates powerful 10GbE workflows with ease. 10GbE is 10X faster than traditional 1GbE found on the majority of docking stations. Users can connect to ultra fast 10GbE networks in order to transfer files faster than ever, or connect to 10GbE equipped NAS storage devices. The 10GbE port is backwards compatible with 1GbE, 2.5GbE, and 5GbE. *Ethernet is only supported on Thunderbolt based hosts as well as USB4 hosts that support PCIe.
  • Dual USB Controllers - A unique feature of the TS5 Plus is that it includes Dual USB Controllers. This means that the ports on the front of the dock have one 10Gb/s USB controller for all of the attached devices, and the rear ports have a second 10Gb/s controller for the devices on the back ports. This avoids any bottlenecks when multiple high speed USB devices are connected, and is an ideal feature to complement the total of 10x USB ports on the dock.

Those maximums describe the dock’s stated capabilities; the laptop and attached devices must also support the relevant charging standards and power levels. If you are selecting a dock for a high-power laptop, compare its charging requirement with the dock’s host output rather than assuming that the 180W adapter’s rating is the laptop charging figure.

What independent testing says about storage and networking

In Tom’s Hardware’s external-SSD testing, the Keychron recorded approximately 5,400 MBps reads and 4,200 MBps writes. The publication used a 1TB Micron 2500 PCIe 4.0 SSD in an Orico Thunderbolt 5 enclosure for the Keychron and Plugable docks. These are results from that drive, enclosure, dock, and test-host setup—not guaranteed speeds for every SSD or computer.

Tom’s Hardware also reported that all three docks in its comparison reached the limit of their 2.5GbE ports in its iPerf3 test. That establishes performance in that test, not a promise of a particular internet or file-transfer rate on every network. Your router or switch, cabling, network configuration, and the other endpoint can impose lower limits.

Keychron versus docks with different port layouts

The key trade-off is the kind of expansion you want. Keychron gives you two HDMI 2.1 outputs alongside two downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports. Tom’s Hardware’s tested UGREEN Revodok Maxidok instead adds a native M.2 PCIe 4.0 slot and DisplayPort 2.1. The UGREEN layout may suit someone who values an internal dock-mounted SSD or DisplayPort; Keychron may fit better if two HDMI connections are the priority.

Tom’s Hardware’s comparison also included Plugable’s TBT-UDH2 and concluded that UGREEN offered greater versatility and native storage, while describing Keychron as a reasonable choice for buyers who prefer its two additional HDMI 2.1 connections. That is the publication’s assessment, not a universal ranking: host compatibility and the ports you actually use should decide between them. See the Tom’s Hardware comparison and test details.

If you choose Keychron and later need fast external storage, one of its downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports can connect a compatible enclosure and SSD. Those are separate purchases, not included storage. A dock with a built-in M.2 slot is a more integrated option if you want the drive housed inside the hub.

Who should consider this dock?

  • Consider it if your computer supports the displays you need and you want two HDMI outputs, downstream Thunderbolt expansion, wired 2.5GbE, USB-A peripherals, and card readers in one dock.
  • Look elsewhere if a native M.2 slot or DisplayPort 2.1 is more important than the Keychron’s pair of HDMI outputs.
  • Verify compatibility first if your purchase depends on two 8K displays, a particular multi-monitor arrangement, or charging a laptop that needs a high wattage.

Keychron’s stated specifications make the TB5D-1 a capable and unusually balanced desk hub on paper. The sensible part is its combination of HDMI, downstream Thunderbolt, USB-A, Ethernet, and card-reader connectivity; the important qualification is that display performance ultimately depends on the host. Current stock, live pricing, warranty terms, and long-term reliability are not established by the cited product specifications and comparison.
