Qualcomm announced its Qualcomm 315 5G IoT Modem-RF System on May 20, 2021, positioning it as a purpose-built modem for industrial and enterprise Internet of Things devices. Qualcomm specified sub-6 GHz 5G NR in standalone mode with LTE fallback, plus a design intended to help device makers move from LTE modules to 5G. The announcement is historical: it said commercial availability was expected in the second half of 2021, but the cited materials do not establish current sales or network support.

What Qualcomm announced

The Qualcomm 315 was presented as a modem-to-antenna solution for makers of upgradeable LTE and 5G IoT devices. Qualcomm said it supported global sub-6 GHz 5G NR bands, standalone (SA) operation, and switching to LTE when needed. It was intended for use on public or private 5G networks and alongside existing Ethernet and wired technologies.

Qualcomm’s May 20, 2021 announcement described the product as its first purpose-built IoT modem solution with 5G connectivity optimized for industrial IoT. The company said it was expected to become commercially available in the second half of 2021; that was a launch-era expectation, not confirmation of present-day availability. Qualcomm’s announcement

Qualcomm 315 5G IoT Modem Product Brief

How the design was meant to ease LTE-to-5G upgrades

Qualcomm said a reduced chipset footprint and integrated RF front end were designed to enable modules up to 50% smaller than existing 5G modules. The brief also said the module could fit the same form factor and retain pin-to-pin compatibility with current LTE legacy modules, potentially allowing an OEM to upgrade with minimal or no hardware changes. These are Qualcomm design claims; the cited materials do not provide independent validation or a like-for-like comparison against competing products.

  • Onboard power and network indicators, with multiple reserved pads, for checking module operating status and testing other functions

The product brief also described extended-life hardware and software support for a minimum of eight years through 2029. That is a launch-era statement from Qualcomm, not evidence that terms remain unchanged today or that every device design receives identical support.

Where Qualcomm saw industrial and enterprise uses

Qualcomm listed retail, energy, automation and manufacturing, precision agriculture, construction, mining, and public venues as target sectors. In those settings, cellular connectivity could complement wired Ethernet and other existing technologies rather than automatically replace them. Whether a deployment can use the modem depends on its network, radio-band, interface, and device requirements.
