Owning cryptocurrency means having a claim to assets recorded on a blockchain and a way to authorize transactions involving them. A wallet does not contain coins: it is software or a device used to manage the keys that control access to an account. The key question is who controls those keys—you, or a custodian such as an exchange.
What does it mean to own cryptocurrency?
On Ethereum, assets and account activity are recorded on the blockchain. A private key signs transactions, authorizing actions for the account; a wallet is the interface used to view and interact with it. Ethereum.org explains the relationship in its Ethereum accounts documentation. In practical terms, control of the relevant key is what lets someone authorize transactions. That technical control does not, by itself, settle the legal meaning of ownership, which can depend on the jurisdiction and the arrangement involved.
This distinction also explains why losing a phone does not necessarily mean that the blockchain assets have disappeared. The device may be replaceable if the account can be restored with its recovery information. Conversely, possession of a wallet app or device does not prove that you control its keys; a provider may control them on your behalf.
Custodial and self-custody wallets: who controls the keys?
The defining difference is whether a service provider holds the keys or you do. Bitcoin.org’s guidance on choosing a wallet and its wallet FAQ describe the practical trade-offs.

| Arrangement | Who controls the keys? | What recovery and access depend on | Main responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial account, such as an exchange account | The provider controls the keys; the customer accesses the account through the service. | Provider security, solvency, account-access systems, and withdrawal policies. | Choose and assess the provider, protect account credentials, and understand its access and withdrawal rules. |
| Self-custody wallet | You control the private keys or recovery phrase. | Your ability to keep the key or phrase safe and use it correctly to restore access. | Protect the keys, maintain a private and usable backup, and review transactions before signing. |
A custodian can offer account support and recovery procedures, but access still depends on the provider honoring requests and remaining able to operate. With self-custody, there is no service holding the key for you; recovery depends on the information you preserved. Neither arrangement removes risk. One relies on a provider, while the other puts key protection and recovery directly in your hands.
What is self-custody?
Self-custody means you—not an exchange or wallet service—control the private keys used to authorize transactions. The wallet software or hardware helps you use those keys, but the responsibility for protecting them and preserving recovery information is yours. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance emphasizes protecting both a wallet and its backups.
Self-custody can reduce dependence on a provider for routine access, but it also removes a provider’s account-recovery path. A mistyped address, unsafe transaction approval, stolen phrase, or missing backup can have serious consequences. Key control is not the same as immunity from fraud, device compromise, or user error.

What happens if I lose my seed phrase?
A seed phrase—also called a recovery phrase—is a sensitive form of recovery information for a wallet. If you lose it and also lose access to the wallet’s keys, you may be unable to restore access to the associated funds. Ethereum.org’s wallet FAQ explains that its support cannot recover self-custodied funds without the seed phrase or private keys. Do not assume that a wallet maker, exchange, or blockchain support team can recreate information that only you held.
Recommended Free Tools
Anyone who gets your recovery phrase may be able to control the associated wallet. Ethereum.org’s guidance on security and scam prevention warns against sharing recovery phrases or private keys and against storing a phrase in a screenshot that may sync to cloud storage.
- Keep recovery information private and protected from theft, damage, and unauthorized access.
- Never give a phrase or private key to someone claiming to be support, and never enter it on a site you do not trust.
- Do not upload a phrase or send it through email, messaging, or cloud storage.
- Make sure you understand how to restore the wallet before relying on a backup; a backup that cannot be read or used is not a recovery plan.
A physical backup may help preserve recovery information, but the cited guidance does not evaluate particular backup products or materials. Whatever method you use, the phrase must remain both accessible to you when needed and inaccessible to others.

Is having my own wallet safer than keeping my funds on an exchange?
There is no universal answer. Self-custody changes who bears key-management risk; it does not make cryptocurrency risk-free. An exchange account depends on the provider’s security, solvency, and policies. A self-custody wallet depends on your ability to secure keys and backups, avoid scams, and authorize only transactions you intend. Bitcoin.org’s wallet guidance distinguishes these risks rather than treating one custody arrangement as safest for everyone.
Consider which responsibilities you can reliably manage. A custodial account may be more convenient if you value a provider’s account support and are comfortable depending on its controls. Self-custody may suit someone prepared to manage recovery information and transaction security without expecting a company to restore access. Convenience, control, and recovery are separate trade-offs—not a simple safe-versus-unsafe choice.
Software wallets and hardware wallets: what changes?
Wallet format affects how keys are accessed and what risks are introduced, but it does not change the need to protect recovery information. Bitcoin.org distinguishes mobile, desktop, and hardware wallets by portability, control, and exposure to device or malware risks.

Mobile and desktop wallets
These software wallets make it convenient to interact with accounts from a phone or computer. Because they run on internet-connected devices, their security also depends on the device, its software, and protection against malware and phishing. Bitcoin.org advises keeping only small everyday amounts on an internet-connected computer or phone and warns that online backups are vulnerable to theft.
Hardware wallets
A hardware wallet keeps private keys offline, which can reduce exposure to a compromised computer. It does not prevent every threat: users still need to protect backups, watch for phishing, and carefully review transaction details and approvals before signing. Losing the device without a usable backup can make funds unrecoverable, according to Bitcoin.org’s wallet guidance.
Ethereum.org maintains a directory of wallets for long-term storage. Its listings are informational, not endorsements; the directory’s criteria include security review, maintenance, support, and Ethereum-focused functionality. Listings, device support, and compatibility can change, so verify that a wallet supports the network and assets you intend to use and understand its recovery process before moving funds.

How to choose a custody approach
- Decide who should control the keys. If you use a custodian, understand that provider controls access to the keys. If you self-custody, confirm that you are ready to manage them yourself.
- Assess your recovery plan. For a custodial account, learn how the provider handles access problems and withdrawals. For self-custody, understand how the recovery phrase or key restores the wallet and how you will keep a backup private and usable.
- Match the wallet to your use. Consider the convenience of mobile or desktop access against exposure from connected devices. Consider hardware storage if offline keys fit your needs, while recognizing that backups and safe transaction review remain essential.
- Check compatibility and support information. Confirm current network and asset support, recovery instructions, maintenance, and security information in the wallet provider’s documentation before transferring assets.
