A QR code can be generated in your browser without sending its contents to a QR service—but “client-side” alone does not prove what a particular website collects. The case for a free, 100% client-side generator is straightforward: create a standard, static QR code without putting its destination behind a paid redirect service. That gives users a usable code without a subscription, while making clear what they give up: server-managed destination changes and scan counts.

The distinction matters most when the QR code contains sensitive information, or when you need to know whether its destination can be changed after printing. Those outcomes depend on how the specific tool and code are built.

What “100% client-side” means for a QR code

Client-side means the browser does the work of turning the entered payload—such as a URL or text—into the QR image. If the payload stays in the browser and the tool does not transmit it elsewhere, the service does not need to receive that content to generate the code.

That is a meaningful privacy design choice, but it is not a blanket privacy guarantee. The phrase does not by itself establish whether a site sends page-usage data, uses third-party assets, or transmits information through an optional feature. Check the tool’s privacy disclosure and, where available, its code. OpenQR, for example, says its static codes are generated in the browser and that entered content is not uploaded to its servers; its security page describes its generator code as public. Those statements apply to OpenQR, not automatically to another generator.

UseQR’s developer documentation recommends local generation for credentials and personal data, while describing its server API for public URLs. That distinction is useful when deciding where to generate a Wi-Fi password, contact details, or another sensitive payload. It does not establish that every API provider stores submitted data, or how long one might retain it.

Static QR codes versus redirect-based dynamic codes

A static QR code encodes its payload directly in the code. If that payload is a web address, scanning the code opens that address; there is no QR service in between unless the encoded address itself points to one. Once printed, the encoded content cannot be changed by editing the image.

A dynamic code commonly encodes a service-controlled address instead. The service stores the destination and redirects scans to it. Because the redirect is managed on a server, the service can offer destination changes after printing and may count scans. Those capabilities depend on the provider’s implementation and terms. OpenQR describes this static-versus-dynamic distinction in its privacy page; it is an example of the architecture, not proof that every vendor handles dynamic codes identically.

Code type What the QR code points to Can the destination be changed after printing? Scan counting through a managed redirect
Static The payload itself, such as a URL or text Not through a QR service; changing the content requires creating and distributing a new code No, not through a redirect layer that is not part of the code
Dynamic A service-controlled address that redirects to a stored destination Potentially, if the service supports destination edits Potentially, if the service measures scans

These are architectural differences, not a claim that every dynamic-code vendor offers the same controls or that every static-code workflow is private. A static URL can still lead to a website that tracks visitors after the scan.

Why choose no paywalls and no redirects?

A no-paywall generator avoids making the basic act of creating a QR image contingent on a subscription. A no-redirect approach avoids inserting a managed destination service between the printed code and its intended URL. For someone who wants a durable, straightforward link and does not need scan reporting or post-print destination edits, that is a simpler arrangement.

The trade-off is equally direct: without a managed redirect, you cannot rely on the QR tool to change the destination or count scans after the code is distributed. If either feature is essential—for example, because printed materials are expensive to replace—compare the provider’s edit policy, analytics, privacy terms, and ongoing costs before using a dynamic code.

What to check before generating or printing a code

  • Review what you are encoding. A static code makes its payload part of the image. Avoid putting secrets into a code that will be shared publicly.
  • Confirm the destination. Scan the finished code and verify that it opens the intended address or displays the intended information.
  • Read the privacy details. Look for a specific statement about whether payloads are transmitted, and distinguish that from general claims about client-side generation.
  • Decide whether edits or analytics matter. If you need either after printing, a static code without a managed destination will not provide that server-mediated mechanism.
  • Check the actual tool’s formats and features. Export options and supported payload types vary by generator. OpenQR’s repository lists PNG, WebP, SVG, and PDF exports, styling options, and URL, text, email, phone, SMS, WhatsApp, Wi-Fi, and location payloads; these are documented features of OpenQR, not a universal feature list.
  • Test a physical print. Printer, paper, size, contrast, and placement can affect scanning. No specific minimum print size or contrast threshold is established here, so test the actual code in its intended setting before producing a large batch.

OpenQR’s repository describes QR codes as an open standard and identifies ISO/IEC 18004. That is the repository’s characterization, rather than a quotation from the standards text.

Making a physical QR label

If you want to place a code on a package or object, a downloadable image can be used in a layout or printed on compatible label stock. A label sheet is optional; it is not required to create or use a QR code. Check that your printer supports the sheet, and scan a test print before using it on items you cannot easily relabel.
