Sony had not decided when to launch its next console or what it would cost, according to its May 2026 financial-results Q&A. Dates reported for 2027, 2028, or 2029 are estimates—not a confirmed PS6 release date. If you are deciding whether to buy a PS5 or wait, base that choice on your need to play now and the price available where you live, not on an assumed PS6 launch window or price.
Has Sony announced the PS6 release date?
No. In the May 2026 results-call account, Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki said, “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.” GameSpot reported that Sony was monitoring elevated memory prices and expected supply constraints in FY2027 as it considered its plans. That context does not establish that the console will be delayed.
When is the PS6 coming out?
Sony has not announced a date. A Stuff roundup published August 21, 2026 described outside estimates ranging from late 2027 to 2029 and recounted Bloomberg reporting that Sony was considering 2028 or 2029. These are attributed reports and speculation, not a launch commitment; they do not override Sony’s undecided position in the cited May Q&A.
How much will the PS6 cost?
There is no announced PS6 price. Totoki’s May 2026 statement explicitly said pricing had not been decided, so no specific figure can be treated as a Sony price or a reliable forecast.

Should you buy a PS5 now or wait for PS6?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer: weigh the value of playing current games now against the cost of a PS5 and the uncertainty of waiting for a successor. Sony reported 93.7 million cumulative PS5 hardware sell-in units as of March 31, 2026, a shipment measure rather than a count of verified active owners. The figure indicates the current platform has reached substantial scale, but it does not establish how long Sony will support it or what the PS6 launch lineup will be. See Sony Interactive Entertainment’s FY26.1Q Supplemental Information.
Buying a PS5 now may suit you if
- You want access to PS5 games soon and would use the console while waiting for a successor.
- A current local price and available model fit your budget.
- Waiting without a console would mean missing games or play time you value.
Waiting may suit you if
- You are content to keep playing on your existing system or take a break from console gaming.
- You would rather postpone a substantial purchase than buy hardware whose successor is unannounced.
- You accept that the wait could be longer or shorter than outside estimates suggest, and that no PS6 price is known.
Compare the actual PS5 price available to you with the value you place on playing now. Do not treat a forecast launch year or an invented PS6 price as a guaranteed saving. Sony has not announced a PS6 launch lineup or compatibility policy, either.
