Hackers can pose as IT or helpdesk staff in Microsoft Teams to persuade employees to grant remote access to their devices. Microsoft says the campaign it described on September 2, 2026, relies on social engineering through legitimate Teams features—not a flaw in Teams. The safest response to an unexpected support contact is to end the interaction and verify it with your organization through a known, trusted channel.

How the Teams support impersonation works

In the campaign Microsoft Threat Intelligence described on September 2, 2026, an external actor contacts a person through a Teams chat or call and claims to be IT or helpdesk staff. The attacker then tries to persuade the person to grant remote control, turning a familiar collaboration channel into a route onto the device.

Microsoft summarized the distinction this way: “This activity does not stem from a weakness in Microsoft Teams or its built-in protections; instead, the threat actor abuses legitimate collaboration features by persuading the user to override clearly presented security warnings, highlighting the broader challenge of defending against social engineering rather than technical exploitation.” Microsoft Threat Intelligence’s September 2, 2026 report describes the observed campaign.

What can happen after remote access is granted

In the analyzed intrusion, the operator used PowerShell to download and silently install a malicious MSI. That installer staged a portable Node.js runtime and a JavaScript implant. The operator then performed host and Active Directory reconnaissance, captured screenshots, ran additional payloads, and used Windows Remote Management (WinRM) for lateral movement toward high-value systems.

Logitech Zone Wireless Certified Microsoft Teams Bluetooth Headset
  • SUPPORT WORK FROM ANYWHERE WITH SYNC: Whether employees are in the office, at home, or somewhere else, Sync device management software helps everyone stay connected by letting you ensure their Logitech video collaboration personal devices are being used and up to date.
  • Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
  • Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
  • On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
  • Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.

Microsoft says activity of this kind can precede data theft, extortion, ransomware, or other objectives. Those are possible outcomes, not a claim that every listed outcome occurred in the analyzed intrusion. Microsoft’s April 18, 2026 incident-response playbook describes the broader pattern and notes that later stages can vary by environment or operator.

A separate, dated example from 2024

In May 2024, Microsoft reported that Storm-1811 used Teams messages and calls with display names such as “Help Desk,” “Help Desk IT,” “Help Desk Support,” and “IT Support” to persuade users to grant Quick Assist access. Microsoft described follow-on malicious downloads and tools in that activity. This is a historical example; it does not establish that Storm-1811 was behind the 2026 campaign or that current incidents use the same tools. See Microsoft’s May 15, 2024 advisory.

Warning signs to notice in Teams

  • An unexpected person contacts you claiming to be internal IT or helpdesk staff.
  • The person creates urgency or asks you to ignore an external-contact warning.
  • They ask you to start a remote-assistance session, approve device control, or enter a code into Quick Assist.
  • They ask for account details or want you to approve a sign-in request through chat or a call.

Teams may display an external-tenant label, an Accept or Block prompt, a message preview, or phishing indicators. An external label means the contact is outside your organization; it does not, by itself, prove the person is malicious. Microsoft’s guidance on accepting or blocking people outside your organization explains the prompts users may see.

What to do if someone on Teams says they’re IT support

  1. Do not grant access or share secrets. Do not approve device control, enter a remote-assistance code, disclose credentials, or approve a sign-in request just because the person claims to be IT.
  2. End the chat or call if you cannot verify the person. Contact your internal helpdesk using a known company directory, established support portal, or previously verified phone number—not details supplied by the unexpected contact.
  3. Report the contact. Send the message or call details to your organization’s security team or established reporting channel.
  4. If you already granted access, disconnect and report it immediately. Tell your security or IT team what you approved and when so responders can investigate the device and account.

Microsoft Support advises checking a sender’s name and email, previewing a message, and accepting only when you trust the sender; you can block an untrusted contact. For suspicious calls, Microsoft recommends verifying the caller through a trusted channel, ending the call if their identity is uncertain, and withholding sensitive information until verification. See its guidance for external Teams chats and managing Teams calls. Microsoft’s 2024 advisory says to allow Quick Assist only when you initiated contact with Microsoft Support or your own IT staff.

How organizations can reduce the risk

No single setting addresses every step. Microsoft recommends layered controls that limit opportunities for an attacker and help defenders spot suspicious activity. The right configuration depends on an organization’s environment; Microsoft’s recommendations are not a guarantee that any one control will prevent compromise.

Where it helps Defensive measure What it addresses
Initial contact and user decision Train users to notice external labels, verify unexpected support requests through trusted channels, and report suspicious chats or calls. Reduces the chance that a convincing pretext leads to remote access or disclosure of account information.
Remote sessions and identity access Limit credential-backed remote sessions; enforce Conditional Access with multifactor authentication and compliant-device requirements. Restricts access opportunities and raises the bar for using compromised credentials.
Endpoint and account response Use endpoint and network protections, and investigate suspicious external Teams contact followed by remote-management behavior. Supports detection and response if a user interacts with an attacker.
Lateral movement Restrict WinRM to authorized management workstations. Limits where an operator can use this administrative protocol to move through the environment.

Microsoft’s April 2026 playbook includes Defender detection and hunting guidance for suspicious external Teams contact followed by remote-management behavior. Its 2024 advisory also recommends phishing-resistant authentication for critical apps and educating users not to disclose account information or approve sign-in requests over chat. What is established—and what is not

Microsoft’s reports document the impersonation and remote-access pattern, but the cited material does not establish a prevalence figure for this specific tactic. The 2024 Storm-1811 activity and the campaign described in September 2026 should be treated as separate reports, not automatically attributed to the same actor. Microsoft also says later attack stages can vary, so one incident’s tools and sequence should not be assumed in every case.
