To remove information you shared in a Meta AI chat, type /reset-ai in that AI conversation and follow the in-app response. To review WhatsApp Meta AI history before deleting it, use WhatsApp’s chat-history download option. These actions address different things: a visible chat, information shared with Meta AI, and any separately saved memory used to personalize later answers.
First, identify what you want to remove
- A visible chat: The conversation listed in an app. WhatsApp says users can delete individual Meta AI chats.
- Information shared with Meta AI: Details in an AI interaction that Meta says may be retained or used for purposes including personalization. Meta documents
/reset-aifor deleting information shared in an AI chat. - Saved memory: Details Meta AI may remember to personalize later responses. Meta has said users can delete memories, but that does not establish that deleting a chat also deletes its memory, or vice versa.
Meta’s published controls treat chat history and memory as distinct concepts. Do not assume that removing a conversation from the list removes every detail saved separately.
Delete information shared in a Meta AI chat
- Open the Meta AI conversation in Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp.
- Type
/reset-aiin the message field and send it. - Read the in-app response and follow any confirmation instructions to check whether the reset succeeded.
Meta documents this command for deleting information shared in AI chats across those three services. It does not publish a universal confirmation screen or a complete schedule for when all records are removed. See Meta’s Privacy Matters: Meta’s Generative AI Features.
Review or download WhatsApp Meta AI history first
If you may want a copy of the conversation, download the history before deleting the chat or your WhatsApp account. WhatsApp says deleting either prevents you from requesting or downloading that history.

- Open your Meta AI chat in WhatsApp.
- Tap the three-dot options menu, then choose Chat history.
- Select the history you want to download.
- Send
/download-all-ai-infoin the message field. - Wait for WhatsApp to send a download link.
WhatsApp also says users can delete individual Meta AI chats or request deletion of information previously shared with Meta AI. Its help content does not provide all the steps for those deletion options, so use the current WhatsApp Help Center instructions for your account.
Delete a saved Meta AI memory
Meta announced that certain details shared in one-to-one conversations could be remembered to personalize responses and said users could delete memories. The original announcement described a staged rollout in the US and Canada for iOS and Android; that dated rollout statement does not confirm that the same controls are available to every account today. Check the memory or information-management controls in the Meta AI conversation or app you use, and consult its current help content for the exact steps. Use a temporary chat for future conversations, if available
Meta announced Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app on May 13, 2026. Meta described it as a temporary mode whose messages are not saved and disappear by default. The announcement said the feature would roll out over the coming months, so check your current app to see whether Incognito Chat is available. Meta says information shared while interacting with its generative AI features may be used to improve products and for other purposes, and may be retained to personalize responses. It also says certain questions may be shared with trusted partners, such as search providers, and that automated systems and people review some AI interactions. Meta’s privacy article, updated June 8, 2026, says private messages are not used for training unless someone chooses to share them with AI; the article was updated in November 2025 to clarify that messages shared with AI may be used to train AI. The available Meta and WhatsApp instructions do not establish a complete cross-product deletion process, a retention timetable, or all possible exceptions. In particular, they do not establish that one action immediately erases every copy, derived detail, or record across services. For the controls that apply to your account and region, consult the relevant app’s current Help Center.
