It was a reported milestone, not an audited count of computers or proof that most people preferred Windows 11. The practical issue for Windows 10 users has since changed: Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.
What the July 2025 crossover actually measured
StatCounter estimates operating-system usage from web traffic. The reported crossover refers to the relative usage share of Windows versions in its worldwide desktop data. It does not count every installed PC, establish how many devices are active, or explain why users chose one version over another.
Contemporary reports agreed that Windows 11 had moved ahead, but gave different July figures. Windows Central reported StatCounter at 50.88% for Windows 11 and 46.2% for Windows 10; Computing reported 51.77% and 45.02%, respectively. These are separate publisher reports, not figures to combine or treat as an exact census.

The figures support the conclusion that Windows 11 had overtaken Windows 10 in the reported usage-share estimates. They do not establish a definitive number of Windows 11 computers worldwide. In particular, claims that the milestone represented more than 700 million active Windows 11 devices are not a StatCounter count.

Windows 10 support has ended
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The operating system still runs, but a device without applicable extended support no longer receives regular security updates, software and feature updates, or technical assistance from Microsoft. The usage-share crossover did not itself cause Windows 10 support to end; the date was Microsoft’s support policy deadline. For people still using Windows 10, the decision is now whether to move to a supported Windows 11 installation, use the available consumer security-update bridge if eligible, or replace the PC.

Choose a path for a Windows 10 PC

Upgrade if the PC is eligible
Microsoft says eligible Windows 10 Home and Pro devices can upgrade free to the equivalent Windows 11 edition. Eligibility depends on meeting Windows 11 system requirements. Use Microsoft’s compatibility and upgrade guidance to check the specific PC rather than assuming age alone determines whether it qualifies.
Use ESU as a temporary bridge
Microsoft’s consumer ESU program is for eligible personal-use Windows 10 22H2 devices. It supplies critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027, but not feature updates or general technical support. Microsoft lists enrollment at no additional cost through syncing PC settings, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or paying a one-time $30 USD (or local equivalent) plus tax. Availability and enrollment details can vary by market; check Microsoft’s current consumer ESU instructions before enrolling.

Replace a PC that cannot upgrade
If the existing device is ineligible for Windows 11, Microsoft lists purchasing a Windows 11 PC as an option. Consider the cost alongside the computer’s condition, performance, the software you rely on, and any accessibility requirements. Do not assume an accessory can make an incompatible PC meet Windows 11 requirements.

What the milestone does—and does not—tell you
- It does show that Windows 11’s estimated share passed Windows 10’s in the reported July 2025 worldwide Windows desktop data.
- It does not show an audited total of installed devices, an exact global count of active users, or why people upgraded.
- It does not mean Windows 10 stopped working when Windows 11 moved ahead; the separate support deadline was October 14, 2025.
- It does not make ESU a substitute for full support: the program covers specified security updates, not new features or general technical assistance.
