In Daria Dovzhikova’s original 2026 benchmark, an AI agent using Radar’s Kubernetes MCP server diagnosed slightly more of 52 injected cluster faults than the same model using raw kubectl, while using fewer reported tool calls, tokens, and seconds. A later Radar rerun found a much smaller tool-call gap than the original headline claimed, and measured faster correct diagnoses in a different 54-scenario setup. These are useful comparisons of two ways to supply cluster context—not proof that MCP itself improves Kubernetes troubleshooting.
What the 52-cluster comparison tested
Daria Dovzhikova’s original report, published on DEV Community on July 21, 2026, describes 52 fault-injection scenarios on a live Amazon EKS cluster. The faults included crash loops, misconfigurations, resource pressure, broken rollouts, and cases where the visible symptom and underlying cause were separated.
The same model, Claude Sonnet 4.6, was given the same prompts and success criteria in two conditions. In one, it used a shell with raw kubectl output. In the other, it used Radar’s Kubernetes MCP server. Success meant identifying the actual root cause. The report’s averages and scores are the authors’ results for that setup; they are not rates for Kubernetes incidents generally. Read the original 52-scenario write-up.

| Measure | Raw kubectl | Radar MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Tool calls, average per trial | 45.8 | 11.1 |
| Input tokens, average per trial | 4.9 million | 2.3 million |
| Output tokens, average per trial | 3,040 | 1,039 |
| Agent time, average per trial | 334 seconds | 169 seconds |
| Pass rate | 77.6% | 80.8% |
| Diagnostic score | 0.765 | 0.862 |
The original post characterized the tool-call result as 76% fewer calls with Radar MCP, alongside reported reductions of 53% in input tokens, 66% in output tokens, and 49% in agent time. Its pass rate was 3.2 percentage points higher and its diagnostic score was 0.097 higher. Those figures describe this particular benchmark and its measurement choices, not a general performance guarantee.
What the later 54-scenario rerun changed
A later post by Nadav Erell, CEO of Skyhook, reports an updated benchmark run. The article is dated July 20, 2026 and says it was updated August 6, 2026. It uses 54 paired SREGym scenarios, Claude Sonnet 5 on both arms, and a three-node EKS cluster in us-east-1. The kubectl arm used raw kubectl through Bash, including exec; the Radar arm used Radar MCP tools, with kubectl blocked.

The graded artifact was each run’s first submitted diagnosis, scored by SREGym’s LLM judge at temperature zero. This is a separate run with a different model and benchmark setup, not an exact reproduction of the original 52 scenarios.
Updated reported results
| Measure | Raw kubectl | Radar MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Pass rate, 54 paired scenarios | 87% (47 of 54) | 91% (49 of 54) |
| Diagnostic score | 0.889 | 0.920 |
| Median time to correct diagnosis, among 44 faults both arms diagnosed correctly | 154 seconds | 41 seconds |
| Tool calls, relative difference reported in rerun | Radar MCP used 43% fewer calls by mean and 19% fewer by median; absolute counts are not stated in the post summary. | |
Among those 44 mutually correct cases, kubectl reached the correct diagnosis sooner in one; Radar did so sooner in 43. The updated author says the accuracy difference is close enough that he would not emphasize it.

The rerun explicitly retracts the original “76% fewer tool calls” headline: it did not replicate under the newer setup. It also changes the emphasis from total tool calls to time to a correct diagnosis. Erell explains that the original timing included a later attempted-fix stage despite the claim being about diagnosis, and that a call count treats calls of very different duration as equivalent. The updated time figure is therefore a median for the 44 cases correctly diagnosed by both arms, not an average across every trial.
Read the updated 54-scenario rerun. Both benchmark accounts are published by Radar/Skyhook or an author who discloses a Radar connection; the later report updates the earlier result but is not independent validation.

Why structured cluster context could matter more than MCP
Dovzhikova’s interpretation is that raw command output makes an agent repeatedly reconstruct resource ownership, service routing, and the sequence of changes from separate textual responses. Radar’s server instead returns a resource graph and change timeline in a form the agent can use directly. The later post makes a related distinction: MCP is a connector protocol, while the information served through it is what may change the task.
Erell puts it this way: “MCP is a connector; an MCP server that just proxies kubectl returns the same wall of YAML with an extra hop in front of it, and I’d expect that to be slower than the shell, not faster than the shell.” The benchmark compares Radar’s structured, correlated context with raw shell output; it does not isolate the protocol as the cause of the result. The authors’ explanation is plausible, but their comparison does not independently establish which part of the product or data representation caused the difference.

What the benchmark does—and does not—show
What it supports
- In these described fault-injection tasks, Radar MCP produced a small pass-rate advantage in both reported runs.
- The original run reported substantially fewer tokens, tool calls, and seconds with Radar MCP; the later run found fewer calls by mean and median and a shorter median time to correct diagnosis in the subset both arms solved.
- Providing an agent with correlated topology and change context is a reasonable comparison axis when evaluating Kubernetes troubleshooting tools.
What it does not establish
- That MCP servers generally outperform kubectl, or that a server that simply proxies kubectl would improve results.
- That an agent will remediate faults safely, restore production service, improve uptime, or perform better across all clusters and workloads. The reported grading is about diagnosis.
- That the original 52-scenario run has been exactly reproduced by the later 54-scenario run. The later article notes that SREGym and its harness evolve, which makes exact reproduction difficult.
- An industry-wide success rate or independent confirmation. The two accounts are publisher-authored, and the original test used one model and 52 scenarios.
How to evaluate an MCP server for your own cluster
Use the benchmark as a prompt to test your own failure modes, not as a universal ranking. A useful comparison keeps the model, scenario, prompt, and success criteria constant, and defines exactly when timing starts and stops. Record correctness separately from speed and efficiency so that a quick but incorrect diagnosis cannot look like a win.
- Diagnostic correctness: Require a specific root cause and verify it against the injected fault or a trusted evaluator.
- Time to correct diagnosis: Start and stop the clock consistently; do not mix diagnosis time with attempted remediation.
- Tool and token costs: Track both call counts and call duration, plus input and output tokens. The two runs show why a raw call total alone can be misleading.
- Context coverage: Check whether the tool exposes relationships between resources and relevant change history, not only individual object output.
- Reproducibility: Record the model version, scenario set, cluster configuration, tool versions, prompts, and grading method; rerun enough paired cases to understand variance.
- Permissions and write controls: Verify the actual RBAC identity, secret handling, read versus write operations, and approval gates in your environment. Radar’s descriptions of read-only tools, secret redaction, RBAC-enforced writes, and gated actions are product claims, not independent security certification.
For an operator, the practical question is not simply “MCP or kubectl?” It is whether a particular tool supplies the right evidence, under permissions you accept, and whether your agent can use it to reach a verifiably correct diagnosis on the failures you care about.
