Choose parental controls based on the child’s device—not the parent’s phone. For an iPhone or iPad, set up Family Sharing with the child’s own Apple Account and manage Screen Time. For a supervised Android device, use Google Family Link for app blocking and time limits, and Google Play parental controls to filter age-rated downloads. These tools have different limits: a Play Store rating filter is not a complete content blocker, and Family Link cannot supervise an iPhone or iPad.
Choose controls for the child’s device
The controls follow the child’s operating system. A parent may use an iPhone to manage a supervised Android device with Family Link, but that does not make the child’s iPhone supervisable by Family Link. On Apple devices, use Apple’s Family Sharing and Screen Time setup; on Android, use Family Link and Google Play controls.

Set up parental controls on iPhone or iPad
1. Add the child’s own Apple Account to Family Sharing
Apple directs families to use Family Sharing and a child’s own account rather than sharing a parent’s account. Children under 13 require a Child Account under Apple’s guidance, though the minimum age varies by country or region. See Apple’s instructions for creating an Apple Account for a child.
2. Open the child’s Screen Time settings
- On the parent or guardian’s Apple device, open Settings.
- Tap Family, then the child’s name.
- Tap Screen Time and configure the settings you need.
Apple recommends that the family organizer or parent/guardian manage the child’s controls from their own device. Menu labels and available options can vary with software version. Apple’s Screen Time guide, published September 23, 2026, covers its version 27 redesign. If family devices are not updated to the version required for the redesigned controls, Apple says families can continue using the prior Screen Time experience or adjust controls on the child’s device. 3. Choose app access, time, and content settings
Screen Time brings together controls for app and website access, time allowances, schedules, and content and privacy restrictions. Set the controls around the outcome you want: reduce time in selected apps, restrict access to apps or websites, or limit changes and purchases. Apple describes eligible requests for downloads or purchases and website requests in supported browsers; availability depends on the relevant settings and supported software.
For app age ratings and App Store activity, use the content restrictions. Apple’s guide describes restricting apps by age rating and limiting app installation, deletion, and in-app purchases. Set up parental controls on Android
1. Supervise the child’s Google Account with Family Link
Set up Family Link supervision for the child’s Google Account and supported device. The child-device baseline listed in Google’s current eligibility guidance is Android 6.0 or later; supported roles and requirements can vary. A parent can install the Family Link app on an iPhone or iPad to manage a child’s supervised device, but Family Link does not supervise a child’s iPhone, iPad, or non-Chromebook computer. Check Google’s Family Link device and account requirements for current eligibility.
2. Block or allow apps and set app time limits
In the Family Link app, select the child, then go to Screen time → Time limits → App limits. Choose an app and set its duration. Family Link also provides controls to block or allow apps. Google says app limits require Android 7 or later, exclude system apps, and are shared across the child’s Android and ChromeOS devices. 3. Set Google Play maturity restrictions
In Google Play’s parental controls, choose the highest maturity rating allowed for downloads or purchases. These controls apply to Google Play content; they are not a general web filter or a guarantee that restricted apps cannot be found. Google warns that restricted items may still appear in search results or open through a direct link. Previously downloaded apps may remain visible after a rating limit is set. On a supervised Android device, Family Link can block an existing app separately. Filters may not be available in every country or content category. What the controls do—and do not—cover
- Store ratings are not a complete blocker. Google Play’s age filter limits downloads or purchases by rating, but it may not remove listings from search or prevent access through a direct link.
- Existing installs need separate attention. An app already downloaded may still be visible after applying a Google Play filter; use Family Link to block it on a supervised Android device.
- Some Android apps are exempt from limits. System apps are excluded from Family Link app time limits, and some apps needed for the device or supervision cannot be blocked.
- Eligibility and menus vary. Operating-system versions, device support, account age, regional rules, and software release can affect the available controls. Check the platform’s current support page if a setting is missing.
