A flat panel monitor is a thin, flat display that is not a cathode-ray tube (CRT) monitor. “Flat panel” describes the monitor’s form and broad display class—not one specific technology. LCD and OLED monitors are flat panels, and the term also encompasses plasma displays.
What does “flat panel monitor” mean?
The term distinguishes a thin, flat, non-CRT display from the bulky, deep-screen CRT monitors used in the past. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s TPLC database defines a non-CRT television or monitor as an electronic product designed to receive and display television or video signals from a broadcast, cable, video player or recorder, computer, or another source. FDA TPLC database entry (last updated August 31, 2026).
“Flat panel” is a category, not a synonym for LCD. Display technologies included in flat-panel terminology include LCD, OLED, and plasma. The IEC’s terminology report covers these technologies and notes that detailed technical definitions are specified in separate standards. IEC TR 62728:2011.
Which display technologies can be flat panel?
LCD
An LCD uses liquid crystals to modulate light from a backlight. The liquid crystals control the light passing through the display to form an image.

OLED
OLED pixels emit light directly rather than relying on a separate backlight. OLED is therefore a different image-forming technology from LCD, even though both are flat-panel displays.
Plasma
Plasma is also included in IEC’s overview of flat-panel display terminology. Calling a monitor a flat panel does not, by itself, tell you which of these technologies it uses.

Does “flat panel” tell you a monitor’s specifications?
No. The label describes the general display class and form, not a specific model’s size, resolution, refresh rate, connectors, or mounting compatibility. Check the monitor’s specifications for those details rather than inferring them from “flat panel.”

Check mounting separately
A flat panel is not automatically compatible with every monitor arm or wall mount. VESA mounting refers to standardized positions and sizes for display fittings and screw holes; confirm the monitor’s own specifications match the mount before purchasing.
