Panasonic announced on October 31, 2013, that it would stop producing plasma display panels (PDPs) in December that year and close the associated Amagasaki factory operations by the end of March 2014. The company cited rapid advances in large-screen LCDs, intense price competition and declining demand for plasma—not a single flaw in plasma picture quality.

When did Panasonic stop making plasma TVs?

There were three related milestones, not one shutdown date. Panasonic’s announcement was dated October 31, 2013; PDP production was scheduled to stop in December 2013; and the remaining business operations at its Amagasaki factories were to end by March 2014. Panasonic later confirmed in a 2016 filing that its wholly owned subsidiary, Panasonic Plasma Display Co. (PPD), ended operations at the end of March 2014. PPD manufactured and sold plasma TVs, business-use plasma displays and PDP modules. Panasonic’s October 31, 2013 announcement and its 2016 corporate filing distinguish these stages.

Why did Panasonic leave the plasma business?

Panasonic said it had pursued PDPs for large displays and LCDs for small- and medium-sized displays from 2000. In its account, large-screen LCD technology advanced rapidly while global price competition intensified after the Lehman Shock in September 2008. Panasonic consolidated production at its Amagasaki P4 factory, shifted toward commercial applications and tried to improve earnings, but concluded that falling PDP demand made it difficult to continue.

The company’s 2016 filing also identified intensified competition from LCD manufacturers and a sharp fall in plasma-display market prices as negative factors. Together, those points describe a business problem: the market was moving toward LCD while plasma prices and demand were under pressure.

“However, due to rapid, drastic changes in the business environment and a declining demand for PDP in the flat panel display market, it was judged that continuing the business would be difficult and a decision was made to stop production.”

That is Panasonic’s explanation in its October 2013 announcement, not an independent assessment. Panasonic also said its PDPs had received high praise for picture quality and had firm customer demand worldwide. Those favorable product assessments, which are also the company’s characterization, did not make the panel business sustainable as market conditions changed.

How strong was LCD’s rise?

Historical figures show LCD’s growing share, but they cover different regions and measures. EU-24 sales data should not be merged with global shipment figures as if they were one continuous series.

Technology and period Geography and measure Reported result
LCD, 2004 to 2009 EU-24 television sales; European Commission discussion paper using GfK data as reported by Topten (2014) LCD’s share rose from 8% in 2004 to 87% in 2009. European Commission discussion paper
CCFL-backlit LCD and LED-backlit LCD, 2013 EU-24 television sales; European Commission discussion paper using GfK data as reported by Topten (2014) CCFL-backlit LCD had fallen to 4% of sales, while LED-backlit LCD was dominant. Plasma never exceeded 10% in the paper’s EU-24 technology-sales context. European Commission discussion paper
LCD, 2014 report Global TV shipments; NPD Group / NPD DisplaySearch LCD had passed 90% of global TV shipments. NPD forecast LCD unit growth of almost 5% in 2014 and a 48% fall in plasma shipments; those were contemporary forecasts, not current market figures. NPD DisplaySearch report

The EU figures track sales shares within a specific region; the NPD figure concerns global shipments. Read together, they support the broad picture of LCD’s ascendancy, but they are not directly comparable measurements.

Did Panasonic stop making all televisions?

No. The 2013 decision concerned Panasonic’s plasma-panel business, including plasma TVs and commercial displays; it was not an announcement that the company would stop making every kind of television. Panasonic announced a separate end to its LCD panel production in 2019. Panasonic’s 2019 LCD-panel announcement concerns that later, distinct decision.

What the exit does—and does not—say about plasma

Panasonic’s decision is evidence that its PDP business could no longer compete sustainably under the conditions it described. It is not proof that every plasma set was inferior to every LCD television. The company itself pointed to favorable reception for its plasma image quality even as it cited falling demand and market prices. The business exit and a blanket judgment about picture quality are different claims.
