Dropbox moved most of its file-storage workload onto its own system, Magic Pocket, completing the migration in the fourth quarter of 2016. It did not eliminate AWS: Dropbox’s current security whitepaper says file blocks are stored in either AWS or Magic Pocket, and its SEC filing describes continued use of selected AWS resources.

What Dropbox moved, and when

Dropbox announced in July 2016 that Magic Pocket served 90% of its customer data and that it had moved 500 petabytes of user data into the system. The company’s SEC filing says the migration to internal infrastructure was completed in the fourth quarter of 2016. These figures describe the migration at that time, not the present-day split between storage systems.

The scale of the project reflected Dropbox’s rapid growth. In a 2025 retrospective, the company said its stored data grew from 40 petabytes in 2012 to more than 600 petabytes by 2016. The 500-petabyte migration figure and the retrospective’s total-storage figures refer to different reported measures, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

What Magic Pocket is

Magic Pocket is Dropbox’s proprietary storage system, built from its own hardware and software to store customer file data. Dropbox said the system let it control its hardware stack and tune performance to its particular workload. Its current security whitepaper describes Magic Pocket as proprietary hardware and software designed for reliability and security.

Dropbox had already been bringing storage closer to its own operations. In 2015, it said it had relocated all U.S. customer data from off-premises hosts to on-site hosts. That milestone preceded the 2016 announcement about moving 500 petabytes into Magic Pocket.

Why Dropbox built its own storage system

Dropbox’s stated reason was control: its engineers could select and optimize hardware for the demands of its file-storage service instead of relying primarily on a third-party infrastructure provider. The company also expected operating at its scale to improve unit costs. In the 2016 announcement, Dropbox put its rationale this way: “With Magic Pocket, we’re able to control our entire hardware stack and optimize performance for our particular use case.”

This was a build-versus-buy decision made at unusually large scale. Operating a private storage platform requires substantial engineering, hardware investment, data-center operations, and network capacity. The potential benefits—workload-specific design and lower unit costs—depend on scale and execution; Dropbox’s published rationale does not establish that owning infrastructure is cheaper for smaller organizations or that the company achieved a particular lifetime saving.

The transition also had a cost: while data was being migrated, Dropbox maintained copies across internal and third-party infrastructure, increasing storage expense. Its SEC filing says that duplication ended when the migration was completed in the fourth quarter of 2016.

How the storage system evolved

Separating warm and cold files

In 2019, Dropbox described organizing storage into “warm” files, accessed more frequently, and “cold” files, accessed less often. The company said its cold-storage tier used the same hardware and network while reducing disk usage by 25%, with an almost indistinguishable user experience. That is Dropbox’s reported result for its cold tier, not an independently measured comparison.

A private network for syncing

Storage is only part of a file-sync service; data must also travel efficiently between Dropbox’s infrastructure and users. In 2017, Dropbox described expanding its global private network with a custom proxy stack and regional accelerators. Dan Williams, then the company’s Head of Production Engineering, said Dropbox had cut networking costs outside North America in half while increasing global sync speeds by as much as 300%. These are company-reported outcomes, not independent benchmark results.

Does Dropbox still use AWS?

Yes. Dropbox’s security whitepaper says file blocks are stored in one of two systems: AWS or Magic Pocket. Its SEC filing also refers to continued use of selected AWS resources. The documentation confirms that both systems remain part of the described architecture, but it does not state what share of current file data is stored in either one or provide a complete list of AWS workloads.

What Dropbox’s move means for other organizations

Dropbox’s experience shows why a very large service might build storage infrastructure rather than rely exclusively on public cloud. It does not prove that the same choice is right for every company. A useful comparison should account for:

  • Workload scale and predictability: A large, steady storage workload may make specialized infrastructure more practical than a smaller or more variable one.
  • Control and performance: Owning the hardware and software can allow more workload-specific choices, but those choices require teams capable of designing and operating the system.
  • Capital and engineering capacity: Private infrastructure requires investment in equipment, facilities, software, and ongoing operations.
  • Migration risk and overlap: Moving data takes time and can temporarily require duplicate copies, as Dropbox’s SEC filing describes.
  • Geographic reach and network performance: Storage economics alone do not determine user experience; network capacity and regional delivery matter too.
  • Remaining cloud needs: Moving a major storage workload in-house does not necessarily remove public-cloud services from the broader architecture.
