Signal Desktop’s Screen security setting on Windows 11 is designed to keep the app’s contents out of local screenshots and Microsoft Recall snapshots. It is enabled by default, according to Signal, and lives at Signal Desktop Settings > Privacy > Screen security. The Netflix DRM comparison is useful only as an analogy for blocking screen capture: Signal is not using Netflix’s complete DRM system.
What Signal’s Screen security does
Signal says its Windows screen security setting uses a screen-protection mechanism available to application developers. When enabled, the feature is intended to prevent the local computer from capturing Signal’s window, including through Windows 11 Recall. Signal’s May 21, 2025 announcement says that an attempted screenshot will show no Signal content. Signal’s announcement describes the feature and its default-on status; Signal Support gives the setting’s purpose and instructions.
This is local screen-capture protection, not another layer of Signal’s end-to-end encryption. It affects capture on the computer running Signal; it cannot stop someone from photographing the display or capturing Signal on a different device.
How to check or change the setting
- Open Signal Desktop on your Windows 11 PC.
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Screen security.
- Leave the setting enabled to block supported local screen capture. If you turn it off, read the warning and confirm; Windows may then be able to capture the Signal window.
Signal says Screen security is enabled by default on Windows 11. If screenshots unexpectedly omit Signal content, check this setting before treating the behavior as a fault.

Signal protection and Recall controls are different
Signal’s setting controls whether its app window can be captured. Recall’s controls determine whether Windows saves snapshots and which apps or websites Recall may include. Microsoft describes Recall as an opt-in preview for Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, with controls to pause or turn off snapshot saving, filter apps and websites, and delete saved snapshots. Microsoft’s Recall privacy and control page explains those choices.
| Control | What it governs | Where to configure it |
|---|---|---|
| Signal Screen security | Capture of the Signal app window on that PC | Signal Desktop Settings > Privacy > Screen security |
| Recall settings | Whether Recall saves snapshots, and which apps or websites are filtered | Windows Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots |
Microsoft says Recall does not save DRM-protected material, and notes that apps may implement screen-capture protection or be filtered from Recall. It also describes Recall snapshots as local and encrypted. Microsoft’s privacy page covers DRM and filtering; Microsoft’s Recall overview describes snapshot behavior. Microsoft says snapshots may be saved every few seconds and when active-window content changes. These settings and details may change as Recall evolves.

Why the Netflix DRM comparison has limits
The comparison captures one idea: software can use Windows screen-protection facilities to make displayed content unavailable to ordinary capture. It does not mean Signal messages are streaming media, or that Signal and Netflix use identical systems. Signal’s feature is an app-window capture setting; Recall also has separate system-level saving and filtering controls.

Signal warns that screen-capture protection may interfere with accessibility tools such as screen readers or magnifiers. If an assistive tool does not work properly, the Screen security control can be turned off using the steps above, but that can permit local capture of the Signal window. Make that choice based on the accessibility need and your tolerance for capture on that PC.

- Screen security does not stop a recipient from taking a screenshot on their own device.
- It cannot prevent an external camera from photographing the screen.
- For additional control over Recall, use Windows’ Recall & snapshots settings to pause or disable saving, filter Signal, or delete snapshots.
Signal recommends disabling Recall or filtering Signal in Recall before turning off Screen security. Microsoft’s settings path is Windows Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots; labels can vary as Windows updates.
