Vast is proposing Haven-2 as a commercial low-Earth-orbit station that could serve NASA and other customers after the International Space Station. It is a plan, not an operating station or a NASA-selected ISS replacement: NASA’s July 2026 update described a draft competitive procurement, while Vast’s published schedule and design details remain company projections.

What is Haven-2?

Haven-2 is a proposed modular space station from aerospace startup Vast. The company announced the concept on October 14, 2024, at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, positioning it as a candidate for NASA’s Commercial Low Earth Orbit Destinations (CLD) program and as an eventual successor to the ISS. Vast CEO Max Haot described the company’s aim as to “win the NASA Commercial LEO Destination (CLD) contract and build the successor to the International Space Station.” That is Vast’s stated goal, not a NASA award or decision.

Vast says Haven-2 would support microgravity research, in-space manufacturing and other payloads. Its current project page describes laboratory and external-payload facilities, visiting-vehicle and docking capability, a cupola and an EVA airlock in the planned mature configuration. Vast’s undated current page, accessed in 2026, lists a proposed crew of 12 and 510 m³ of habitable volume. Those are design figures, not independently verified measurements or capacity achieved by a station in orbit.

Will Vast’s station replace the ISS?

Not at present. “Successor” describes Vast’s ambition for Haven-2 and the market it wants to serve; it does not mean the company has built or been chosen to operate a replacement. NASA describes its approach as helping commercial providers develop and demonstrate stations, then moving toward certification and buying services. NASA expects to be one customer in a commercial market, rather than simply naming one private station as the ISS’s direct replacement.

That distinction matters because an ISS transition requires more than a proposed station design. NASA’s program description separates development and demonstration from later certification and service procurement. Haven-2’s intended role therefore depends on future technical progress and NASA’s procurement decisions.

Has NASA selected Vast?

No selection is reported in NASA’s July 6, 2026 procurement update. NASA said a draft request for proposals was available for feedback and outlined plans for firm-fixed-price, multi-award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contracts. It described a later competition for final design, testing, evaluation, certification and services. This is an evolving competitive process, not evidence that Haven-2 has won a contract.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency was “focused on supporting those efforts, enabling the capabilities that make this transition possible.” NASA’s role in the broader program—and its technical work with Vast on a predecessor project—should not be confused with selecting Haven-2 or certifying it.

What schedule and features does Vast propose?

Vast’s October 2024 announcement made the first module’s timing conditional: “If selected in 2026,” the company proposed an initial module in 2028, followed by additional modules. Vast’s current project page says module launches would start in 2028 and targets the full configuration for 2032. These are company projections, not completed milestones or guaranteed launch dates; the current page is undated and may change.

The 2024 announcement described a first module five meters longer than Haven-1 and with nearly twice its livable volume. Vast’s current page sets out the proposed mature station’s features, including two docking ports, external-payload facilities, a 3.8-meter cupola window and an EVA airlock. These descriptions reflect company plans at different points in time; they should not be treated as proof that those systems are built, tested as an integrated Haven-2 station, or certified.

What development work has actually happened?

NASA-assisted Haven-1 subsystem testing

NASA reported on May 28, 2025, that testing of a trace-contaminant-control subsystem for Haven-1 had been completed at Marshall Space Flight Center under a reimbursable Space Act Agreement. NASA said the test data and knowledge could help validate Haven-1 and support future Haven-2 development. The work is evidence of a specific technical collaboration; it is not Haven-2 certification, a station award, or proof that Haven-2 is ready to fly. Angela Hart, manager of NASA’s Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development Program, said environmental-control testing is critical to the health and safety of future commercial station crews.

Haven Demo’s uncrewed mission

Vast reported on March 19, 2026, that its uncrewed Haven Demo technology testbed completed a three-month mission and controlled deorbit. The company said the demonstrator completed 49 test objectives, covering systems such as avionics, networking, solar arrays, communications, thermal control, propulsion and flight software. Those are company-reported achievements for Haven Demo, not an on-orbit test of a Haven-2 module.

What “private space station” means here

In this context, “private” means a commercially owned and operated destination intended to sell services to customers, including NASA. It does not mean Haven-2 is already open to the public or that ordinary travelers can book a visit. The published material establishes a proposed station and its intended customer market, not a consumer travel product.

For readers tracking progress, the useful distinctions are status and evidence: a company’s concept and target dates are not an awarded NASA service contract; technical testing on Haven-1 is not Haven-2 certification; and a completed Haven Demo mission is not an operational commercial station.
