Linux accounted for a reported 2.69% of Steam users in May 2025, up 0.42 percentage points from April. That made May’s figure higher than the same-month readings cited for 2024 and 2023, though the available comparisons do not establish an all-time record.
What percentage of Steam users used Linux in May 2025?
Phoronix reported a 2.69% Linux share in Valve’s May 2025 Steam Hardware & Software Survey, published in its June 1, 2025 report. The reported monthly increase was 0.42 percentage points. Phoronix’s May 2025 report is the source for these historical figures.
In the same May 2025 report, Windows accounted for 95.45% and macOS for 1.85%. The three reported shares sum to 100%.
| Operating system | Reported share, May 2025 |
|---|---|
| Windows | 95.45% (Phoronix, June 1, 2025 report) |
| Linux | 2.69% (Phoronix, June 1, 2025 report) |
| macOS | 1.85% (Phoronix, June 1, 2025 report) |
How does May 2025 compare with earlier May readings?
Phoronix’s June 1, 2025 article cited Linux shares of 2.32% in May 2024 and 1.47% in May 2023. Against those same-month comparisons, May 2025 was higher by 0.37 percentage points than May 2024 and 1.22 percentage points than May 2023.

| May 2023 | 1.47% (historical comparison in Phoronix, June 1, 2025 report) |
These cited readings support describing May 2025 as the highest in years relative to the two earlier May figures. They do not, by themselves, verify the peak across every earlier month or establish an all-time high.
What does the Steam survey measure?
Valve says the Steam Hardware & Software Survey is conducted monthly and that “Participation in the survey is optional, and anonymous.” It is therefore a survey, not a census or a direct count of every Steam user. Its reported share describes the survey result; it does not provide an absolute count of Linux-using Steam customers.

Valve’s live Steam Hardware & Software Survey page presents newer monthly results when viewed, so it should not be used as though it were a preserved May 2025 data table. The 2.69% figure above is a historical value attributed to Phoronix’s contemporaneous report, not a current Steam platform share.
Why did Linux usage on Steam increase in May 2025?
The reported 0.42 percentage-point rise tells how much the Linux share moved between survey months, not what caused the movement. Phoronix discussed SteamOS and Steam Deck as important parts of modern Steam Linux adoption, providing relevant ecosystem context, but its May 2025 report does not isolate the Deck’s contribution or establish that it caused that month’s increase.

More broadly, a change in a voluntary survey’s reported share should not be translated directly into a change in the total number of Linux users: the figures do not give an absolute user count or identify the cause of the monthly movement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are 2.69% still the current Linux share on Steam?
No. The 2.69% figure is specifically the reported May 2025 survey result. Steam’s survey is monthly, and Valve’s live page displays later results; readers seeking a current share should consult the corresponding current-month survey rather than reuse the historical May 2025 figure.
