The Steam Hardware Survey is still running, but its monthly results can swing sharply because participation is optional and the people represented in one month may differ from those in another. Recent Windows, Linux, and language-share shifts are consistent with changes in the respondent mix; Valve has not published enough methodology to confirm that explanation as the cause of any particular jump.
What is the Steam Hardware Survey?
Valve describes it as a monthly survey that collects information about the hardware and software its customers use, to help inform technology investment and product decisions. Participation is optional and anonymous, according to Steam’s survey description.
The published page does not state the number of respondents, how they are selected or invited, the response rate, whether results are weighted, or how shared machines and unusual results are handled. Without those details, readers cannot calculate conventional sampling uncertainty or verify a specific explanation for an unusual result.
Why did the numbers move so dramatically?
Several reported swings involved categories changing together in ways that suggest the month’s respondent mix may have shifted. That is a plausible explanation, not a confirmed account from Valve: correlation between language and operating-system changes does not establish why the mix changed or how the survey produced it.

March 2024: a jump in Simplified Chinese
Phoronix reported that Simplified Chinese client-language share rose 7.6 percentage points in the March 2024 results, alongside notable movements elsewhere in the survey. The language shift is evidence that the represented respondents changed, but it does not reveal why.
February and March 2025: Windows 10 and Linux move, then reverse
Coverage of February 2025 described a sharp rise in Simplified Chinese share alongside a Windows 10 increase and a Linux decline. In March, reported results showed Linux rebounding as Simplified Chinese share fell back. The paired changes are consistent with a respondent-composition effect, but Valve has not publicly confirmed that mechanism.

Explanations involving a particular region, event, internet café, or bug should therefore be treated as hypotheses unless separately verified. The public results establish the reported movements, not their definitive cause.
How should you read the latest figures?
The Steam results page for September 2026 reports Windows at 95.03%, macOS at 1.92%, and Linux at 3.05%. These are shares reported for Steam survey respondents under the page’s platform view—not estimates of operating-system use across all desktop computers. The live page changes over time, so figures should be attributed to the month and platform selection shown when quoted: Steam Hardware & Software Survey.

How to compare Steam survey months responsibly
- Use the same platform filter and denominator for every month in the comparison.
- Check a longer run of results, not just adjacent months, before calling a movement a lasting adoption trend.
- Label a difference in percentage points as such; do not confuse it with a relative percentage change.
- Describe values as shares of Steam survey respondents, not shares of all computer users.
- Do not treat Steam’s figures and general desktop-market estimates as directly comparable populations.
What remains unknown
Valve’s public survey description does not explain how participants are selected, how many respond, whether weighting is applied, how shared or internet-café computers are counted, or whether outliers lead to corrections. Those gaps prevent outsiders from determining precisely why a particular month changed. The survey remains useful for broad patterns over time, but its published methodology does not support treating it as a census or as a probability sample with known margins of error.
