There is no official NASA ranking of the 25 best Hubble images. This selection is an editorial gallery chosen for visual distinction, scientific or historical importance, variety, and how clearly each image tells a story. Hubble’s pictures are also observations: many combine light collected through different filters, so their colors may represent specific wavelengths rather than an unaided human-eye view.
What makes these 25 Hubble images worth seeing?
The selection spans galaxies, nebulae, stars, and the Solar System, balancing iconic views with images that reveal how astronomers study the universe. NASA’s “27 Key Images in Hubble History” and its image gallery are useful official archives, but neither names a definitive top 25.
25 standout Hubble Space Telescope images
1. Hubble Deep Field
A seemingly empty patch of sky became a crowded view of the distant universe. NASA says the image reveals several hundred previously unseen galaxies. It combines observations made over ten consecutive days, December 18–28, 1995, using Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2—not one instantaneous exposure. Blue, red, and infrared observations provided data astronomers could use to infer galaxy properties statistically. NASA’s Hubble key-images archive explains the image and its significance.
2. Mystic Mountain
This pillar of gas and dust in the Carina Nebula rises about three light-years. Fledgling stars are embedded within it, while radiation and winds from nearby bright stars shape the material. It is a striking portrait of star formation and the forces acting on a stellar nursery. See NASA’s Hubble key-images archive.

3. Pillars of Creation
Set in the Eagle Nebula, or M16, these towering structures are an active star-forming region. NASA’s key-image description puts the pillars at about five light-years tall; a separate NASA image article gives a rough range of four to five light-years. In the celebrated processed view, blue maps oxygen, red sulfur, and green nitrogen and hydrogen. The colors help distinguish emissions; they are not an unmodified view of what human eyes would see. Read NASA’s key-image entry and Pillars of Creation article.
4. Antennae Galaxies
NGC 4038 and NGC 4039 are interacting galaxies whose encounter has drawn stars out of their host galaxies. The image turns a galactic collision into a visible record of gravitational interaction. NASA describes the pair in its Hubble key-images archive.
5. Crab Nebula
This expanding supernova remnant is shown in a mosaic assembled from 24 Hubble exposures with Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2. NASA Goddard says the exposures were taken in October 1999, January 2000, and December 2000. The familiar full view is therefore a composite assembled across multiple observing dates, not a single frame. Details are in the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center account.
6–25. Explore the wider Hubble gallery
To complete the list with properly attributed images, consult NASA’s broader Hubble image gallery alongside its key-images archive. Together, these archives include planetary nebulae, star clusters, galaxies, Solar System targets, and other nebulae. Use the individual image pages for the subject, observation details, instrument, image credit, and any explanation of how the published color view was made. This avoids assigning an unsupported date or credit to an image based only on its appearance.

They are real records of light captured by the telescope, but a released image’s colors may be assigned to observations made through selected filters or at wavelengths outside visible light. In the Pillars of Creation example, NASA maps specific emissions to blue, red, and green. The result is a scientifically informative visualization, not necessarily the colors a person would see by looking through a telescope. Check the caption or image page for its filter and color explanation before interpreting hues as literal visible color.

NASA offers downloadable Hubble lithographs with science explanations and says they can be printed for wall art or classroom use. The downloads are free resources; that does not establish the availability or endorsement of any particular paid print or book. See NASA’s Hubble image gallery for image resources.
