Compare the gadget with your phone for one specific task—not by counting features. If the gadget makes that task meaningfully easier or more capable, works with your phone, and is worth its cost and upkeep, it may be a useful addition. If your phone already handles the job well enough, keeping it as your only device is a sound choice.

Start with the job you want the gadget to do

Write down the task, when and where you do it, and what your phone currently does for it. Then decide whether you need a replacement or an addition. A gadget can have more features on paper without improving the particular job that matters to you.

For example, a phone may be enough for counting steps if you carry it consistently. A wrist-worn tracker may be more convenient if you want activity tracking while your phone is set aside, continuous wear, or information you can glance at. A smartwatch may add apps or communications, but its usefulness depends on the exact model and how you plan to use it.

Consumer Reports describes wearable features including communications, payments, music, GPS, and health tracking, while noting that many models need a smartphone pairing for full functionality (Consumer Reports’ smartwatch and fitness tracker guide). That does not establish that every watch outperforms every phone: the comparison depends on the specific devices and task.

Compare the same factors on both devices

Use this checklist for the phone and the gadget you are considering. Where you are comparing particular models, use the same task and questions for each one rather than relying on category-wide claims.

Factor What to check
Capability What can the gadget do that your phone cannot, or do substantially better for this task?
Measurement quality Is there independent testing of the exact feature? A sensor count or marketing name does not establish accuracy.
Form and convenience Does wearing it, using it hands-free, or seeing information at a glance make the task easier? Will you actually carry or wear it?
Independence Does it require your phone nearby, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, an account, an app, or a separate cellular plan?
Compatibility Does the exact model work with your phone, operating system, apps, and accessories?
Ongoing effort How often does it need charging? Are setup and reviewing its data manageable for you?
Privacy and security What data and permissions does it require? Are its controls clear, and can you choose protective settings?
Cost Compare the purchase price with any required subscription, connectivity charge, replacement accessory, or future upkeep.

Look for evidence of better performance, not more features

A dedicated sensor, a wearable form, or an independent connection could help with a particular task—but only if that benefit is established for the feature and model you care about. Check whether credible testing addresses that exact capability. Which? says its smartwatch testing covers battery life, fitness-tracking accuracy, usability, notifications, and privacy and security (Which? smartwatch testing methodology).

Do not treat one model’s test result as proof about all watches, or infer accuracy from a device’s sensor count. The available evidence does not establish a general head-to-head advantage for an unspecified gadget over an unspecified phone. For a fair comparison, look for testing of the precise feature and devices you are considering.

Check compatibility and daily friction

Find out what the gadget needs to work: a particular phone or operating system, an app, an account, an internet connection, or a phone that stays nearby. Some watches rely on a paired phone; others can operate independently in some respects. Independence can also mean extra setup or connectivity requirements, so confirm what the exact model supports before buying. Consumer NZ’s buying guidance distinguishes basic trackers from app-capable watches and devices that can work independently of a phone (Consumer NZ’s smartwatch and fitness tracker buying guide).

Count the routine the gadget adds: charging, wearing or carrying it, keeping its app and account working, and interpreting any information it collects. A device that is uncomfortable, lacks a feature you need, or needs charging too often may end up unused. Which?’s test categories include battery life and usability, two practical factors to weigh alongside a device’s advertised capabilities.

Review privacy and security before connecting it

Connected gadgets may need an internet connection, smartphone app, or account. The UK government’s guidance recommends checking product reviews and manufacturer documentation and advises that requirements can vary by device (UK government guidance on using smart devices safely).

Before setup, check what information the manufacturer collects, why it is needed, and how to change privacy settings. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) sets out expectations for smart-device makers that include collecting only necessary data, explaining data practices transparently, and providing meaningful control over consent (ICO expectations for the smart-device industry, 11 June 2026). Its consumer guidance also notes that a product’s app may request access to your phone’s microphone, location, camera, contacts, or photos; review app permissions and sharing settings rather than granting access automatically (ICO guidance on smart products).

These are checks to make, not evidence that a particular product is insecure. The ICO’s William Malcolm, Executive Director for Regulatory Risk and Innovation, said: “Connected devices process some of the most sensitive data about people’s lives, from data about health to daily routines and family life.”

Treat health readings cautiously

A wellness feature is not automatically a medical device intended or authorized to diagnose or treat a condition. The U.S. Government Accountability Office’s 6 August 2026 assessment says wearables may have clinical potential, but their reliability varies and integrating them into clinical workflows can be difficult (GAO assessment of wearable technologies in clinical decision-making).

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s warning is specific: smartwatches and smart rings that claim to measure blood glucose without piercing the skin do not directly test blood glucose levels (FDA safety communication on smartwatches and smart rings claiming to measure blood glucose). If you rely on accurate glucose readings, discuss an appropriate FDA-authorized device with a health professional. Do not extend this warning to every wearable feature; check the exact device and claim.

Make the decision using your actual routine

  1. Name the task. Specify what you want to do and the situations in which you do it.
  2. Try the phone’s current approach. Decide whether it already meets your needs in those situations.
  3. Identify the gadget’s concrete advantage. Look for a task-specific improvement, such as greater convenience in a situation where you cannot use your phone—not simply a longer feature list.
  4. Verify the trade-offs. Check exact-model compatibility, phone dependence, charging, privacy requirements, and total ongoing cost.
  5. Weigh only benefits you will use. Buy if the verified improvement matters enough to justify the price and daily upkeep. Otherwise, continue using your phone.
