There is no universal best Kodi preset: smooth playback depends on your display, device, media file and audio connection, while privacy choices depend on whether you use Kodi’s network features. Start by checking what happens during playback, then adjust only the setting tied to the problem. The paths and labels below follow Kodi’s official documentation, which identifies several settings as updated for Kodi v21; options can differ by version and operating system.

Check playback before changing settings

When a video stutters, shows the wrong refresh rate or has no sound, Kodi’s Player Process Info can help separate a decoding problem from a display or audio mismatch. During playback, open the player-process information display using the control available in your Kodi setup. It can show the video resolution and frame rate, hardware or software decoding, cache status, audio codec and channels, sample rate, and system CPU use. The available details vary with the media and active settings. Kodi’s Player Process Info documentation describes the values it reports.

Record the original value, change one setting at a time, and replay the same troublesome file. This makes it easier to tell whether an adjustment helped and to reverse it if it did not. A setting that is unavailable on your device is not necessarily missing by mistake; decoding and processing choices are platform-specific.

Match the display refresh rate to the video

When to try refresh-rate switching

In Settings → Player → Videos, Kodi’s Adjust display refresh rate option can switch a compatible TV or monitor to a refresh rate that better matches the video stream. The available behavior includes Off, Always, On start/stop and On start. If you want Kodi to switch for playback and then restore the display state afterward, test On start/stop; the actual transition depends on the display and connected hardware. Kodi notes that the screen may go blank for several seconds during a change. See Kodi’s video-player settings documentation.

What to expect

This option requires the device, connection and display to support the relevant modes. A brief blank screen during switching is not necessarily a playback failure. If the display does not return as expected or the result is worse, switch the option off and check the hardware’s supported refresh rates before trying another behavior.

Choose between display sync and audio passthrough

Sync playback to display adjusts playback speed to synchronize video with the display’s refresh rate. Kodi’s documentation illustrates the mechanism with a 23.967 fps source on a 50 Hz display, where the player changes speed to simulate 25 fps playback. That is an explanatory example, not a target or guaranteed result for other systems.

The important tradeoff is that sync playback disables audio passthrough: Kodi may need to adjust audio timing, so it must handle audio rather than pass the encoded stream through unchanged. If you need passthrough to an AV receiver, do not assume both options can be used together. Choose based on the issue you are trying to address and the audio path you need. Kodi documents sync playback under video-player settings and explains passthrough in its audio settings guide.

Use hardware decoding and image processing selectively

Decoding depends on the platform

Hardware decoding can reduce the work done by the CPU on a lower-powered system, but the available decoder depends on the operating system, device and codec. Kodi lists examples such as DXVA2 on Windows, VAAPI and VDPAU on Linux, and VideoToolbox on macOS. Not every system shows the same controls, and some codec options carry device-specific cautions. Avoid enabling every toggle simply because it is present; check Player Process Info during the problem file to see whether Kodi is decoding in hardware or software. Kodi’s video settings documentation covers platform-specific options.

HDR, scaling and optional processing

HDR mode controls apply only on supported platforms with an HDR-capable display. Depending on the option and system, Kodi can switch display mode to suit HDR media or preserve the current mode and tone-map. High-quality scaling and optional video super-resolution features also depend on hardware. They can increase GPU or memory load and power use, so treat them as optional experiments on compatible devices rather than baseline improvements for everyone.

If a processing change makes playback less stable, restore the previous value and compare using the same file. For a device that cannot decode a particular file smoothly, first verify Kodi’s codec and hardware support for that operating system and model; settings alone cannot guarantee that the hardware can handle every format.

Set audio output for the connection you actually use

Channels and output mode

In Settings → System → Audio, Number of channels describes the output connection or speaker layout; it does not configure passthrough. Kodi offers output modes including Fixed, Best Match and Optimised. Fixed mode disables passthrough, so do not select it if your goal is to send supported encoded audio formats to a receiver for decoding. Consult Kodi’s audio settings documentation for the options available in your version.

Passthrough and receiver support

Passthrough is hardware-dependent. If Kodi connects through an AV receiver, enable only formats that receiver supports. If Kodi connects directly to a TV, do not assume the TV accepts every surround format. Kodi warns that selecting unsupported codecs can cause very poor playback or no audio. Check the capabilities of the device that actually receives the signal before enabling each format.

Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

When passthrough is active, Kodi’s volume and amplification changes do not affect the audio stream. Those controls are therefore not a remedy for a passthrough volume problem; use the receiver or downstream audio equipment instead. And if you enable sync playback to display, remember that Kodi disables passthrough so it can make timing corrections.

Turn off network services you do not use

UPnP and DLNA library sharing

Kodi’s UPnP/DLNA options support library sharing, discovery of remote servers and control of remote players. They are useful when you intentionally use network playback around your home. If you do not use those features, leave the related sharing and discovery controls disabled. Kodi’s UPnP documentation describes security risks inherent in these network features; its local UPnP settings are distinct from the separate UPnP control on a home router. Read Kodi’s UPnP guidance before enabling sharing.

Web server and application control

Open Settings → Services → Control to review Kodi’s web server and application-control interfaces. If you do not need remote access or control, leave the relevant controls off. Kodi states, “Never expose these interfaces to the internet.” It recommends leaving web-server authentication enabled; that authentication setting applies to the web server and should not be mistaken for protection of every separate control interface. Kodi also warns that enabling application control lets network programs control Kodi without authentication, so turn it on only for a specific need on a network you trust. See Kodi’s Services/Control documentation.

A practical way to test a change

  1. Reproduce the problem with the same video and note its frame rate, resolution and audio connection.
  2. Open Player Process Info during playback and note decoding mode, CPU use, cache and audio details that relate to the symptom.
  3. Change one relevant setting only: refresh-rate behavior for a display mismatch, decoding or processing for a video-load issue, or output and passthrough settings for an audio issue.
  4. Replay the same segment and check Player Process Info again. If the result is worse or unchanged, restore the recorded value before testing another option.

Kodi’s documentation does not establish a general percentage improvement or promise that a particular setting eliminates stutter. Results depend on the file and the complete playback chain, so verify the outcome on your own system rather than treating a toggle as a universal fix.
