They overlap in a developer’s workflow, but they are not interchangeable. Choose Prettier for consistent presentation, ESLint when you need tailored lint rules and plugins, or Biome if its integrated workflow and language support fit your project.
Prettier vs ESLint vs Biome: what’s the difference?
| Tool | Primary job | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Prettier | Formats supported files by parsing and reprinting them in a consistent style. | Teams that want predictable formatting with few style decisions. |
| ESLint | Analyzes code using configurable rules, plugins, parsers, globals, and rule severities. | Projects that need code-quality analysis tailored to their language, framework, or conventions. |
| Biome | Combines formatting and linting, with a check command and documented import organization. |
Web projects that want an integrated toolchain and are covered by Biome’s supported languages and limitations. |
Prettier deliberately does not expose a large collection of formatting rules to debate; it chooses formatting and rewrites the file accordingly. It is not a substitute for checks that flag potential bugs or other code-quality concerns. Prettier’s documentation puts the distinction simply: “In other words, use Prettier for formatting and linters for catching bugs!” (Prettier’s formatter-versus-linter guidance.)
ESLint is primarily a linter, not a dedicated formatter. Its configurable rules and plugin system let a project decide what to analyze and how severe a finding should be. Its documentation recommends using a dedicated formatter for formatting concerns (ESLint configuration guide).
Biome brings formatting and linting together. It documents separate format and lint commands as well as check, which runs checks through its toolchain (Biome getting started).

Which formatter and linter should you use?
| Your priority | Best starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| A consistent formatter with little style debate | Prettier | Confirm support for the repository’s file formats and syntax extensions; settle on project configuration and editor/CI commands. |
| Custom lint rules, plugins, and code-quality analysis | ESLint | Check required plugins, framework and language support, parser needs, and globals. Keep formatting separate or disable conflicting style rules. |
| One integrated formatter-and-linter workflow for a web project | Biome | Check its supported languages and documented limitations, compare results on representative files, and verify migration behavior. |
| An existing ESLint project that also needs formatting | Prettier plus ESLint | Prevent conflicting format rules from being enabled and define a clear order for formatting, lint fixes, and checks. |
These are workflow recommendations, not evidence that one tool is universally faster or more accurate. To compare tools fairly on your own project, use the same repository, file set, versions, configuration, and CI environment.
Should you use Prettier with ESLint?
Yes, they can coexist: let Prettier handle presentation and ESLint handle the rules you want to enforce. Prettier recommends eslint-config-prettier to turn off ESLint rules that conflict with or duplicate Prettier’s formatting. Check the final ESLint configuration so those rules are not re-enabled elsewhere.

- Used Book in Good Condition
In modern setups, Prettier recommends running its CLI or editor integration directly rather than routing formatting through a lint plugin by default. That extra layer can add editor noise, slow work, and make the workflow more indirect. Keep formatting and linting as distinct commands when that makes their responsibilities clearer.
How to make formatting consistent across a project
Keep the project configuration in the repository
Prettier resolves configuration from the file being formatted and searches upward through its parent directories. It intentionally avoids global configuration so a copied project can retain its own formatting behavior. Put the team’s settings in the repository, then align editor, command-line, and CI usage (Prettier configuration).

Do not treat printWidth as a hard line limit
Prettier’s printWidth is a preferred wrapping target, not a strict maximum line length. It is not equivalent to ESLint’s max-len rule; the two settings express different things (Prettier options).
Choose and document the commands
Decide which command developers should run to apply formatting and which command CI should use to check it. Do the same for linting. When an editor formats on save, ensure it reads the repository configuration rather than silently applying different personal defaults.

What to check before adopting Biome
Biome documents formatter, linter, and check commands, and can also organize imports. It can be installed as a development dependency or used as a standalone executable. The CLI’s --write option applies changes, so begin with a representative set of files and inspect the diff before applying it broadly (Biome getting started).
- Confirm the project’s languages, syntax extensions, and framework needs are supported.
- Review Biome’s documented limitations against code patterns your project actually uses.
- Try formatting and linting on representative files; check import changes and migration behavior.
- Pin the selected version in the project’s lockfile so local and CI runs use a consistent tool version.
Biome’s undated homepage, accessed October 4, 2026, claims 97% compatibility with Prettier and links to known limitations (Biome homepage). That is Biome’s own compatibility claim, not an independent test; it does not establish that every project or syntax edge case will behave identically.

How to compare the tools without misleading yourself
There is no like-for-like cross-tool benchmark established here that supports a general speed or accuracy winner. Biome’s homepage also publishes a formatting comparison described as approximately 35× faster, using 171,127 lines across 2,104 files on an Intel Core i7 1270P (Biome homepage). That is a vendor-reported result for that sample and setup, not a prediction for a different repository or CI environment.
For a practical decision, run each candidate against the same representative files with versions and configuration recorded. Compare the resulting diffs, diagnostics, language coverage, editor behavior, and CI integration. A formatter/linter choice is ultimately about the workflow and checks your project needs, not a single headline figure.
