To get a first MSP430 application running, install Texas Instruments’ Code Composer Studio (CCS), choose a LaunchPad compatible with the exact MCU your example targets, import a known example such as an LED blink, then build, load, and run it in a debug session. MSP430 is a family of microcontrollers, not a single board: the pins, peripherals, memory, and compatible accessories vary by device.

What you need before starting

  • A development environment: TI’s Code Composer Studio supports creating and debugging applications for TI processors and microcontrollers, including MSP430. Check TI’s CCS page for the current release and installation instructions; the referenced page identifies CCS v21 as based on the Theia IDE framework, but software versions and setup requirements can change.
  • A compatible target: Use a LaunchPad or another development board built for the specific MSP430 device used by your project. Confirm the MCU model before following pin-specific or peripheral-specific instructions.
  • An example and its documentation: Starting with a vendor example helps you learn the import, build, programming, and debug workflow without first designing an entire application.
  • A USB connection and host computer: The board’s documentation determines the required cable, operating-system support, and any additional hardware. Do not assume every kit includes the same accessories.

Choose a LaunchPad for the exact MCU

TI describes LaunchPad kits and BoosterPack plug-in modules as the main evaluation platform for most MSP430 development. A BoosterPack is an add-on, not a substitute for checking the base board: confirm that its connector and electrical requirements match the LaunchPad and project.

For a concrete example, TI’s MSP-EXP430FR2433 LaunchPad is designed for the MSP430FR2433. It includes an onboard eZ-FET debug probe, two buttons, and two LEDs. TI lists a USB cable in the package and notes that a supercapacitor is user-supplied. These details apply to this kit only; it is not a universal MSP430 board.

Before buying or wiring a board, check its exact MCU, package and pinout, available peripherals, memory, headers, and included programming/debug hardware. A tutorial written for one LaunchPad may require changes—or may not work at all—on a different device.

Start with a known example

TI’s MSP430 Fundamentals Workshop introduces development by importing an example that blinks an LED. The workshop uses an MSP430FR5994 LaunchPad, and says its instructions can be adapted to other LaunchPads when an equivalent device and example are available. That qualification matters: the example and board must match, and LED connections or project settings may differ.

For a first application, follow the example’s documented steps rather than beginning with a blank project:

  1. Identify the target. Record the MCU part number printed on the board or listed in its product documentation. Locate an example intended for that part or a documented compatible board.
  2. Open or import the example in CCS. Use the import procedure and project files supplied with the example. Verify the selected device and project configuration before building.
  3. Build the project. The IDE compiles the source and reports errors or warnings. If the build fails, check that the project targets the correct MCU and that its required files and tool support are installed.
  4. Start a debug session and load the program. The workshop’s sequence uses CCS to begin debugging and program/load the example onto the target. The exact menu labels can vary by CCS release and project setup.
  5. Run the application. Resume execution on the target and observe the behavior described by the example—in this case, the LED blink. If nothing happens, confirm the correct board is connected and selected, the program was loaded, and the example matches the board’s LED hardware.

Find examples, device details, and support

TI provides MSP430Ware and related examples through Code Composer Studio desktop or cloud and TI Resource Explorer, according to its MSP430FR2355 product page. The page also points to online collateral, training, and the E2E support forums. Availability and exact tooling can depend on the selected device, so verify that an example and its documentation support your target before building around them.

Use the product page and datasheet for the exact MCU when checking pin assignments, memory, peripherals, and electrical limits. Family-level descriptions are useful for orientation, but they do not establish that every feature or example applies to every MSP430 part.

Build, load, run, inspect, revise

Once the example runs, the development cycle is incremental: change one part of the program, build it, load the updated application, run it, and inspect the result. Use the debugger to pause execution and examine program state when behavior differs from what the example describes. This is general workflow guidance; the exact debug controls and available inspection features depend on the CCS version and target.

Keep a working copy of the original example so you can compare changes or return to a known starting point. As the project grows, record the MCU model, board, example source, and toolchain version alongside the code. That information makes it easier to diagnose a mismatch between project settings and hardware.
