Xilinx said its Virtex-7 2000T could accommodate designs of up to 20 million ASIC gates. That figure is the manufacturer’s estimate of design capacity—not a universal conversion between FPGA logic cells and ASIC gates. The XC7V2000T has 1,954,560 logic cells, and its four FPGA dice are connected using Stacked Silicon Interconnect technology so they can be programmed as one FPGA.

What does “20 million ASIC gates” mean?

It is Xilinx’s stated capacity equivalence for the Virtex-7 2000T. In a figure caption in its Fourth Quarter 2011 Xcell Journal, Xilinx said the device could accommodate complex designs of up to 20 million ASIC gates. This is a vendor claim about the scale of designs the FPGA could hold, not a general rule for converting logic cells into ASIC gates. The result depends on the design and on how gate capacity is defined.

That distinction matters when comparing devices: 1,954,560 logic cells is the XC7V2000T’s listed FPGA capacity, while 20 million ASIC gates is Xilinx’s design-capacity equivalence. The figures describe different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable specifications.

What is inside the XC7V2000T?

AMD’s current Virtex-7 family table lists these resources for the XC7V2000T:

SOHO Instruments Data Acquisition Modules NI PXIe-7902, 24-Channel, PXI High-Speed Serial Instrument, Include Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA to Implement Various Test Serial Ports
  • The PXIe-7902 can be operated in two modes: In interface mode, the user can control the Ethernet interfaces in real time via software. Test mode is conducted via scripted operations where the user specifies all facets of the transaction including header info, payload, packet type, and cadence/timing of operations before handing off execution to the hardware.
  • During both modes, all incoming and outgoing packets are time stamped, recorded, and logged for user review. The NI PXIe-7902 has 2 GB DRAM.
  • The PXIe-7902 supports electrical/optical high-speed cables. The PXIe-7902 has six Mini-SAS HD (x4) front-panel connectors
  • The CLK IN input frequency range for the NI PXIe-7902 is 10 MHz to 300 MHz

The chip’s multi-die construction was central to the product. Xilinx described four FPGA dice connected through a silicon interposer using Stacked Silicon Interconnect (SSI) technology. Despite the internal arrangement, the intended use model remained familiar: designers could program the device as one large FPGA through the Xilinx tool flow.

Why use an FPGA of this scale?

Xilinx associated the Virtex-7 2000T with system integration, ASIC replacement, and ASIC prototyping and emulation. Its size could let a design team implement a complex system in programmable hardware, but that does not make an FPGA a drop-in replacement for every ASIC. The two technologies have different implementation characteristics, and whether an FPGA suits a particular product depends on its design requirements.

Xilinx’s 2011 Xcell Journal caption said the device could accommodate designs of up to 20 million ASIC gates “while saving drastically on NRE costs.” That is the manufacturer’s stated rationale; it should not be read as a quantified cost guarantee for every project.

When was it announced, and is it available now?

Xilinx announced first shipments in October 2011. Its announcement described the Virtex-7 2000T as having 6.8 billion transistors and 2 million logic cells, with capacity equivalent to 20 million ASIC gates. TSMC later said in 2013 that the 28 nm CoWoS-based device was in volume production. These are historical milestones; they do not establish the part’s production status or availability in 2026.
