In August 2025, Microsoft executive David Weston predicted that people might do less mousing and typing as computers become more capable of seeing, hearing, and responding to spoken requests. That is a forecast about a possible multimodal future—not an announced product commitment.
What did Microsoft say about Windows in 2030?
Windows Central reported on August 5, 2025, that David Weston, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Enterprise and OS Security, was asked to predict Windows in 2030. He said, “I think we will do less with our eyes and more talking to our computers.” He also described a future in which a computer could see and hear what the user does, then respond to requests for more sophisticated actions.
Weston compared that future with the shift from older computing: “The world of mousing around and typing, will feel as alien as it does to Gen-Z to use MS-DOS.” These are Weston’s predictions as quoted by Windows Central. The report noted that Microsoft had not officially announced plans to replace the cursor or peripherals.
Does “multimodal” mean voice-only computing?
No. Weston’s description was multimodal: computers would take in more than typed commands or mouse movements, including visual and audio context, while users could speak requests. That is broader than voice dictation, which turns speech into text, or Voice Access, which lets users operate Windows by voice. It also should not be confused with an AI agent that can independently complete actions across applications; the prediction does not establish which actions future Windows systems will support.

A July 2025 Microsoft Community Hub article argued that conversational interfaces could reduce menu navigation for requests such as summarizing an article or asking for an Excel formula. Its author also said keyboards and mice were not disappearing, and the post disclaims that its views necessarily reflect Microsoft’s official policy. It is an individual community perspective, not a Windows roadmap.
What voice features can Windows users use now?
Microsoft’s December 3, 2025 Windows accessibility recap describes Voice Access and Fluid Dictation as distinct capabilities. Voice Access supports voice interaction with Windows; Fluid Dictation handles spoken text and, according to Microsoft, can correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling in real time. These documented features show that voice is already part of Windows, but do not establish hands-free support for every task or application.

Fluid Dictation
Microsoft says Fluid Dictation can use custom vocabulary configured in Voice Access and work across first- and third-party Windows apps. The company describes it as powered by on-device AI on Copilot+ PCs, without requiring an internet connection. That on-device qualification is specific to Copilot+ PCs; it should not be generalized to every Windows computer. Microsoft also reported configurable wait time before Voice Access acts, a custom word dictionary, flexible command variations, improved recognition of some speech patterns, and Chinese and Japanese support. These are Microsoft’s feature descriptions, not independent accuracy testing or a guarantee of equal results for every speaker.
Voice Access and Voice Typing
Microsoft’s October 2023 accessibility overview describes Voice Access in Windows 11 and Voice Typing for speech recognition, transcription, and automatic punctuation. Because that overview is dated, consult Microsoft’s current Windows documentation for exact availability and instructions for a particular Windows version. A microphone is needed for dictation, but Microsoft does not say that an external USB microphone is required.

Why mice and keyboards will still matter
Voice is not the best fit for every task or circumstance. Dictation, navigation, precise pointing, and detailed editing make different demands. Speaking aloud may be unsuitable in shared or quiet spaces, and people vary in speech patterns, vocabulary, comfort, and accessibility needs. Some workflows also benefit from tactile feedback or precise physical control. The available Microsoft sources do not provide a benchmark comparing voice with a keyboard or mouse across these tasks.
Microsoft’s accessibility work also points away from a single replacement input method. Its Adaptive Accessories include a wireless adaptive hub and buttons that can augment or replace conventional keyboard input for some users and tasks, including email, writing, gaming, and editing. Microsoft says these accessories were developed with people who have difficulty using a traditional mouse and keyboard.

In its March 18, 2025 Ability Summit recap, Microsoft announced the Xbox Adaptive Joystick, a wired controller for players with limited mobility. The same post said Tobii Dynavox was integrating Microsoft Neural Voice into assistive communication solutions used with eye gaze. These are examples of physical and assistive technologies complementing or providing alternatives to standard controls—not evidence of one universal successor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What would determine whether voice replaces more input?
- Task: Dictating text differs from precise pointing, complex editing, or navigating an unfamiliar interface.
- Setting: Privacy, background noise, and whether speaking aloud is practical can affect the choice.
- Personal fit: Recognition depends on how well a system handles an individual’s speech and vocabulary; available feature descriptions do not guarantee equal performance.
- Access needs: A person may prefer voice, adaptive controls, a conventional keyboard, or a combination depending on the task.
- Software support: A voice feature’s existence does not mean every workflow or application supports it.
Microsoft has not supplied a robust figure for how many people will use voice instead of mice or keyboards by 2030. The attendance and accessibility-skilling figures in its Ability Summit recap are not measurements of voice adoption, recognition accuracy, or likely peripheral replacement.

What should Windows users expect by 2030?
The defensible expectation is that voice and AI may become more prominent alongside existing input methods, not that mice and keyboards are scheduled to disappear. Weston’s 2025 comments describe a possible direction; they do not confirm when particular features will arrive or whether future Windows systems will make traditional controls obsolete. For now, Windows has documented voice capabilities for bounded tasks, while Microsoft’s adaptive hardware illustrates why multiple ways to interact remain important.
