What Apple said Subramanya would lead
Apple’s December 1, 2025 announcement named Subramanya vice president of AI and said he would report to software engineering chief Craig Federighi. The three areas Apple specifically assigned to his leadership were:
- Apple Foundation Models
- Machine-learning research
- AI Safety and Evaluation
That remit should not be mistaken for leadership of every AI-related function at Apple. In the same announcement, Apple said the remainder of John Giannandrea’s organization would be divided in part between Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue. It identified Search and Knowledge and AI Infrastructure among the organization’s areas, but did not put those functions in Subramanya’s named remit.
Apple framed the appointment as bringing research expertise together with product integration. That was the company’s rationale for the move, not evidence of results already achieved. CEO Tim Cook said, “AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and to bring his extraordinary AI expertise to Apple.”

His career before Apple
Apple said Subramanya most recently served as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft. Before that, he spent 16 years at Google, where Apple described him as head of engineering for Google’s Gemini Assistant. The 16-year tenure is Apple’s description in its 2025 announcement.
This background is relevant to the work Apple assigned him: it combines model development and machine-learning research with the practical challenge of integrating AI into products. It does not, by itself, establish how Apple’s systems perform or what Subramanya personally contributed to later products.
Why the appointment mattered to Siri
At the time of the appointment, Apple described work toward a more personalized Siri under Federighi’s oversight. Reuters’ December 2025 coverage likewise reported that Siri improvements had been delayed until 2026. These were plans and reporting from that period, not a guarantee that a particular feature would arrive on a specific schedule.
Later developments show the broader environment in which Subramanya’s remit sits. In March 2026, Axios reported that Apple hired Lilian Rincon to lead AI product marketing and described a multiyear Google partnership that lets Apple run Gemini models from its own devices and servers. That report does not establish that Subramanya personally negotiated the partnership.

A June 9, 2026 TechRadar report on Apple’s WWDC Siri briefing described an architecture combining on-device and cloud models. It reported that Subramanya discussed collaboration with Google to extend Private Cloud Compute to third-party cloud, and described Nvidia technology in the architecture. Those are details reported from Apple’s briefing, not independently verified specifications or a guarantee of availability across devices. They also do not attribute the architecture or partnership decisions to Subramanya alone.

The public record cited here establishes Apple’s announced role and remit as of December 1, 2025, and June 2026 coverage still identified Subramanya as Apple’s VP of AI. It does not independently confirm his exact title or reporting line on October 4, 2026. Nor do these sources provide outcome metrics for Apple AI under his leadership. The sound way to describe his role is therefore by the responsibilities Apple announced, while treating Siri’s later architecture as work by Apple and its partners.
