Ubuntu Unity 22.04 LTS brought the Unity7 desktop to Ubuntu 22.04’s Jammy Jellyfish release, with Unity-focused Yaru theme integration and accent-color controls. It was a community release—not yet an official Ubuntu flavor—and it is now a historical release: the Ubuntu Unity project recommends 24.04.4 LTS for long-term stability.

What’s new in Ubuntu Unity 22.04 LTS?

The main appeal was the Unity7 desktop experience within Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Unity7’s established workflow includes the Heads-Up Display (HUD), Global Menu and a classic desktop flow. These are characteristics of the Unity environment, not features first created for the 22.04 release. The Ubuntu Unity project describes that workflow on its official site.

Unity7 with Yaru integration

A release-specific detail was the integration of Yaru with Unity7. The project says Yaru gained complete Unity7 support, with accent-color changes available through Settings and a panel or indicator dropdown. That made Ubuntu’s visual customization available in the Unity environment.

Accent colors were also part of Ubuntu Desktop

Accent colors were not unique to Ubuntu Unity. Canonical’s announcement for Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 said its Yaru theme offered ten accent colors across light and dark variants. That broader Ubuntu Desktop customization helps put the Unity integration in context; the color count alone does not distinguish the Unity edition. See Canonical’s Ubuntu 22.04 LTS announcement.

Release-era package context

Ubuntu’s package index lists the Unity package version for this release line as 7.5.1+22.04.20211026.2-0ubuntu1. This identifies the package version associated with Ubuntu 22.04, but it is not a complete inventory of the Ubuntu Unity installation image or its applications. The package listing is available from Ubuntu Packages.

Was Ubuntu Unity 22.04 an official Ubuntu flavor?

No. Ubuntu Unity 22.04 was a community release. The project says Ubuntu Unity became an official Ubuntu flavor starting with Ubuntu Unity 22.10. That distinction matters when comparing 22.04-era status with later releases; official-flavor recognition came after 22.04. The project’s account is at Ubuntu Unity’s flavor announcement.

Is Ubuntu Unity 22.04 LTS still supported?

Do not assume that the general Ubuntu 22.04 support dates apply to the Ubuntu Unity 22.04 image. Ubuntu’s general 22.04 release information describes five years of maintenance through April 2027 for Ubuntu Desktop, Server, Cloud and Core, and three years for remaining flavors, with additional ESM support available. Its release table lists June 2027 as the end of standard support for the general Ubuntu 22.04 release. These are base Ubuntu lifecycle statements, not confirmation that the Ubuntu Unity 22.04 flavor image receives support for the same period.

The Unity project’s release-era account said Ubuntu Unity 22.04’s three-year LTS support ended in April 2025. As of October 2026, treat that flavor release as historical rather than currently supported. For the general release lifecycle, consult Ubuntu 22.04 release notes and Ubuntu release dates; for the Unity-specific support statement, see the project’s announcement.

Should you install Ubuntu Unity 22.04 now?

If you want to try the Unity7 interface specifically, the 22.04 release documents a historical version of that experience. For a long-term installation, follow the project’s current recommendation instead: Ubuntu Unity 24.04.4 LTS, which the project says is supported until 2027. Check the Ubuntu Unity project site for current guidance.

If you are installing a Unity image, choose it from the project’s download page. Ubuntu’s documentation covers ISO and flashable-image downloads; a USB flash drive can serve as installation media. Ubuntu itself is software, not a physical product.
