A portable USB drive usually means a USB flash drive, also called a thumb drive: a small, removable device for carrying or transferring files. The phrase is descriptive rather than the name of a specific USB standard, so it does not by itself tell you the drive’s capacity, speed, connector, or compatibility.
What “portable USB drive” means
In everyday use, a portable USB drive is typically a USB flash drive: a compact storage device that connects through USB and stores data in flash memory. NIST’s glossary lists flash memory devices and “flash/thumb drives” as examples of portable storage devices: NIST glossary: Portable storage device.
“Portable USB drive” is not a separate formal USB-IF device-class name. USB-IF uses Mass Storage for Base Class 08h, a technical category for devices conforming to its Mass Storage Device Class Specification. Class codes identify device functionality and may be used to load a driver nominally: USB-IF: Defined Class Codes.
How it differs from other portable storage
Portable storage is a broader category than USB flash drives. NIST’s glossary also includes external or removable hard drives, external solid-state drives, tapes, and memory cards. Those devices can be portable storage, but they are different product forms from the small flash/thumb drive usually meant by “portable USB drive.”

What the name does not tell you
The label alone does not establish a particular capacity, transfer speed, connector, or whether a specific computer or phone will work with the drive. Those details depend on the device and the host connection. USB connections involve host and peripheral roles, but that general relationship does not guarantee compatibility with a particular phone or drive; see USB-IF: USB On-The-Go and Embedded Host.

- Check the drive’s connector and whether the target host supports that connection.
- For a phone or other portable device, confirm its supported USB connection and any requirements for using external storage.
- Use the product’s stated specifications for capacity and performance rather than inferring them from the phrase “portable USB drive.”
