Connecting online orders directly to a restaurant’s point-of-sale (POS) system and kitchen display system (KDS)—or kitchen printer—can remove the step of manually re-entering each order. The key is a working path from ordering channel to POS to kitchen, with compatible menu data and a kitchen workflow staff can use. Integration can reduce handoffs, but it does not by itself guarantee fewer errors, faster tickets, lower labor costs, or higher sales.

How an order moves from a customer to the kitchen

  1. Customer places an order: The channel may be the restaurant website, an app, a QR-code menu, an in-store kiosk, or another supported service.
  2. The order reaches the POS: With a direct integration, the order appears in the restaurant’s POS rather than requiring staff to type it in again.
  3. The POS routes it for preparation: Depending on the setup, the order goes to a KDS or a kitchen printer. Staff prepare it and update its status according to the system’s workflow.
  4. The restaurant fulfills the order: Staff coordinate pickup, table service, or delivery using the information and status available to them.

Oracle describes this order path for its Simphony platform: online orders enter the POS and can then be sent to a kitchen display for preparation. Oracle also says its online ordering can avoid manual entry and automate order data flow to the kitchen. These are descriptions of Oracle’s products and capabilities, not independent tests of operating results. Oracle: Online Ordering for Restaurants.

A KDS is not essential to every setup. Some restaurants route orders to a kitchen printer instead. Confirm that the POS supports the hardware and routing your kitchen actually uses.

Which handoffs can integration remove?

Manual re-entry

When an order arrives in the POS automatically, staff do not need to transcribe it from a separate tablet or order screen. That removes a task and a possible point of mismatch, but the system still depends on correct setup, reliable operation, and staff following the intended workflow.

Separate menu updates

Shared menu data can reduce the need to update the same item in several places. Oracle says Simphony can maintain online menus from the POS, including changes to items, availability, and prices. Whether this works across every channel depends on the specific integration, so verify which fields sync and how quickly changes take effect.

Unclear kitchen status

A connected kitchen workflow can make order information available where preparation happens, with status handling determined by the system. Ask how orders are routed, prioritized, edited, and marked complete; a connection alone does not settle those operational rules.

How to choose a setup that fits your restaurant

Start with the restaurant’s service model and customers, not with a list of features. The National Restaurant Association’s 2024 technology report recommends matching investments to the customer base served. Its figures describe reported opinions and willingness, not guaranteed results from installing a particular system. National Restaurant Association: Restaurant Technology Landscape Report 2024.

What to compare Questions to ask
Order-channel coverage Can it accept orders from your website, app, in-store ordering, and delivery channels? Are the channels you use included in the integration?
POS and kitchen compatibility Does each channel connect directly to your current POS? Can orders be routed to your KDS or kitchen printer without staff re-entry?
Menu and availability syncing Where are prices, item details, and out-of-stock status maintained? Which channels receive changes, and what steps remain manual?
Kitchen workflow Can the system route orders to the right station, support your prioritization rules, and show staff how orders move through preparation and fulfillment?
Customer and service fit Does the ordering method make sense for your mix of table service, limited service, pickup, and delivery? Will customers and employees find it practical?
Implementation and support What hardware and software are required at your location? Who configures the connection, trains staff, and helps resolve integration or outage issues?

Before committing, walk the vendor through a test order from each important channel, including a menu change and an unavailable item. Confirm where the order appears, what staff must do, and what happens if a connection or device fails. Get compatibility and support requirements for your specific location in writing.

Does connecting the systems prove the restaurant will save time or money?

No universal savings figure follows from the workflow description. The National Restaurant Association reported in 2024 that 76% of restaurant operators said technology gives them a competitive edge. That is an operator view, not evidence that POS-to-kitchen integration causes a particular financial outcome. The Association also reported that operators planned technology investment to enhance customer experience (60%), improve productivity or efficiency in the service area (55%), or improve kitchen productivity or efficiency (52%). Those are stated investment aims, not measured results. National Restaurant Association: Restaurant Technology Landscape Report 2024.

In guidance published October 23, 2025, the Association stated: “Frictionless technology, particularly where it concerns ordering and payment systems, improves the effectiveness of day-to-day restaurant operations.” This is the Association’s guidance, not a quantified independent causal finding. When a tablet kiosk makes sense

A tablet computer, such as an iPad, can serve as a basic in-store self-ordering kiosk when paired with appropriate ordering software. The National Restaurant Association describes adapting an online-ordering template for a kiosk and says QR-based orders can go to both the POS and, where used, the KDS. A tablet by itself is not an integrated restaurant system: confirm the software, POS compatibility, kitchen routing, and staff process before relying on it. National Restaurant Association: Existing tech and reasonably priced add-ons can reduce labor and supply costs.

Customer interest can inform that decision, but it is not a forecast. In the Association’s 2024 reporting, 60% of full-service diners said they would be likely to order on a tablet at the table, while 70% of limited-service customers said they would be likely to order using a smartphone app. These are stated willingness measures for those segments, not observed adoption or proof of increased sales.
