Yes—an unofficial project called NvStrapsReBar can enable and test Resizable BAR on some Nvidia GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series systems. It is not an Nvidia-supported feature toggle: the documented method modifies and flashes the motherboard’s UEFI firmware, then uses a Windows utility. Compatibility depends on the specific graphics card, motherboard, and firmware, and the available sources do not establish a performance gain for Turing.

What Resizable BAR does—and what it does not promise

Nvidia describes Resizable BAR (ReBAR) as an optional PCI Express feature that lets the CPU access a larger portion of the GPU’s frame buffer. That can allow graphics assets to be requested and transferred in larger or concurrent operations. It is a data-access mechanism, not a guarantee of higher frame rates in every game or workload. Nvidia’s explanation of ReBAR covers the feature in the context of supported RTX 30-series systems.

What NvStrapsReBar changes

NvStrapsReBar is a community project that describes a UEFI driver and Windows executable for enabling and testing ReBAR on Turing GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series graphics cards. Its process involves adding the project’s DXE driver to a motherboard UEFI image and flashing the modified firmware. Users then configure ReBAR in UEFI where the option exists, run the Windows utility as administrator, and save its configuration. These are the project’s instructions, not Nvidia’s supported setup procedure. The project README and related ReBarUEFI documentation describe the project and firmware-image editing approach.

This is not a generic driver setting that can be switched on safely by following one universal recipe. The relevant firmware image and steps depend on the exact motherboard, firmware, and project release. NvStrapsReBar points users to known-working GPU and motherboard reports in its issue tracker; the project documentation does not claim that every Turing card or board is compatible. Check those reports for your exact hardware before considering the modification.

Configuration details and risks

The project documents fallback settings for older motherboards that lack a ReBAR menu: enable Above 4G Decoding and disable CSM. It also warns that UEFI setting changes disable the saved configuration and that its method depends on the GPU BAR0 address assigned by system firmware.

  • Before changing hardware: Disable NvStrapsReBar before adding another GPU or making other hardware changes, as the project instructs.
  • Before changing UEFI settings: Expect the mod’s configuration to be disabled when UEFI settings change; consult the project instructions for the applicable release and configuration.
  • Before flashing: Confirm the exact board and firmware image, and understand the board-specific recovery options. The sources do not establish a universal recovery path or quantify the chance of firmware failure.

Because this process changes motherboard firmware, it carries more risk than a normal driver or control-panel change. That does not mean every installation will damage a board, but it does mean a compatible GPU alone is not enough to establish that the procedure is suitable for your system.

How this differs from Nvidia’s official support

Nvidia’s documented ReBAR firmware-update tool is for RTX 30-series GPUs, not Turing. Its official setup instructions also require a supported GPU and VBIOS, compatible motherboard SBIOS and CPU/platform, and an appropriate driver; enabled status can be checked in Nvidia Control Panel’s System Information. Nvidia’s RTX 30-series setup page describes that supported configuration. The company’s firmware update tool page, updated January 24, 2023, likewise limits the tool to RTX 30-series GPUs.

In a May 22, 2023 response on the Nvidia Developer Forums, representative MarkusHoHo said that adding ReBAR to older GPUs “is not as simple as one might think,” and that whether Nvidia would do so was an internal process he could not discuss publicly. That was Nvidia’s public response at that time; it does not explain the technical method used by NvStrapsReBar or establish the mod’s compatibility.

Question Nvidia’s documented RTX 30-series setup NvStrapsReBar for Turing
GPU scope Supported RTX 30-series GPUs, with compatible firmware and platform requirements documented by Nvidia. Some GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series cards; the project’s reports are hardware-specific.
Motherboard firmware modification Nvidia documents its supported setup and firmware update process; it does not direct users to insert NvStrapsReBar. Requires inserting the project DXE driver into a motherboard UEFI image and flashing it.
Compatibility evidence Nvidia lists platform and firmware requirements for supported configurations. Known-working combinations are tracked by the project; universal compatibility is not established.
Performance evidence Nvidia reported game-dependent results from its RTX 30-series testing. No direct benchmark result for the Turing mod is established by the sources cited here.

What the performance evidence says

In a March 30, 2021 article, Nvidia reported that ReBAR testing on supported RTX 30-series systems produced gains in some games—up to 12%—while other titles saw performance decreases. Nvidia said it used game profiles to enable the feature where testing showed a positive impact. The “up to 12%” figure is Nvidia’s 2021 upper bound for some supported RTX 30-series games; it is not a benchmark of NvStrapsReBar on Turing or a forecast for a GTX 1660 or RTX 2060. Nvidia’s 2021 performance explanation provides that scope.

Should you try it?

NvStrapsReBar is relevant if you have a Turing card, your exact GPU-and-motherboard combination appears in the project’s compatibility reports, and you are prepared to work with motherboard firmware. If the goal is a predictable FPS increase, the available evidence is not enough to recommend the mod: Nvidia’s results cover a different GPU generation and vary by game, while no direct Turing-mod benchmark is established here. For a system you cannot afford to make unavailable, or where firmware recovery is uncertain, the UEFI modification is a poor experiment.
