To wipe a laptop before selling, donating, or recycling it, back up and verify the files you need, then use the operating system’s built-in erase option for your device. On Windows, choose Remove everything and enable Clean data; on a supported Mac, use Erase All Content and Settings; on a Chromebook, use Powerwash. These consumer workflows are not a universal guarantee that no expert could recover data. For regulated or highly sensitive information, use the sanitization method required by your organization and the storage media.

Factory reset and secure erasure are not the same thing

A factory reset is an operating-system recovery feature. It restores or reinstalls the system and removes files or settings according to that platform’s options. Secure erasure describes a result: making access to particular data infeasible for a specified level of effort. The result depends on the device, storage technology, encryption history, selected method, and the recovery effort being considered.

NIST defines media sanitization as a process that renders access to target data infeasible for a given level of effort. Its framework includes Clear, Purge, and Destroy; those terms describe different actions, not a claim that every consumer reset achieves the same assurance. See the NIST CSRC definition of sanitization and its definition of Clear. NIST’s publication record for SP 800-88 Rev. 1 identifies that edition as published in 2014, while the glossary references Rev. 2; consult the applicable current publication and policy before relying on a detailed method or claiming compliance.

For an ordinary consumer handoff, the built-in workflow is the practical starting point. Microsoft explicitly says its consumer Windows data-erasure feature does not meet government and industry data-erasure standards. A reset should therefore not be described as forensic-proof or as making recovery impossible.

Option Purpose What it does What to know
Keep files / repair reset Troubleshoot while keeping personal files Windows reinstalls while preserving personal files and removing apps and settings. Not appropriate for a sale or transfer. Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance.
Remove everything / factory reset Fresh start or ordinary handoff Reinstalls or restores the operating system and removes user files, apps, or settings according to the platform. Exact behavior varies by operating system and selected options; back up first. Microsoft; Google Chromebook Help.
Built-in clean or erase option Make ordinary recovery harder during consumer handoff Windows offers Clean data; supported Macs offer Erase All Content and Settings. Microsoft says its consumer option does not meet government and industry erasure standards. Mac availability and assurance depend on supported hardware, macOS, and encryption history. Microsoft; Apple; NCSC.
Sanitization under media or organizational policy Higher-sensitivity or regulated disposal Uses a method selected for the media, data classification, and required level of effort. Follow the current applicable standard, device instructions, and organizational policy. A generic consumer reset cannot certify compliance. NIST CSRC; NCSC.

Prepare before you erase

  1. Back up and verify. Copy important local files to a separate destination and open a few copied files to confirm they work. Synced cloud files and external-storage files are separate from what the laptop reset removes. See Microsoft’s reset guidance and Google’s Chromebook instructions.
  2. Make sure you can access needed accounts and recovery keys. Have account credentials available; if Windows uses BitLocker, locate the recovery key before starting. NCSC also recommends having passwords and other credentials to hand in its device-erasure guidance.
  3. Check ownership and management. A school- or employer-managed device may require administrator or mobile-device-management handling. Google says users cannot reset a managed Chromebook through its standard consumer instructions; contact the administrator.
  4. Separate anything you do not intend to erase. Remove external storage or other removable media you want to keep, and check the reset options for internal volumes. Do not assume a system reset covers every attached drive.
  5. Plan the handoff. After the reset, leave the laptop at its initial setup screen rather than configuring it with your own account. Apple specifically directs users transferring a Mac to stop at Setup Assistant.

Wipe a Windows 11 or Windows 10 laptop

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  2. Select Remove everything for a sale, donation, or other transfer. Keep my files is intended to reinstall Windows while retaining personal files, so it is not the handoff choice.
  3. When offered, enable Clean data to make removed files harder to recover. Review any drive-scope choices and select the scope that matches what you intend to erase.
  4. Choose Cloud download for a fresh Windows download or Local reinstall to use files already on the PC. Microsoft notes that Local reinstall may not include the latest updates.
  5. Start the reset and let it finish. For a recipient, stop at the Windows initial setup screen.

Microsoft’s Reset your PC page applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 and cautions: “The data erasure functionality is targeted at consumers and does not meet government and industry data erasure standards.” Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that release. That lifecycle change is separate from the reset’s erasure assurance.

Erase a supported Mac

Apple’s Erase All Content and Settings feature requires macOS Monterey 12 or later and either Apple silicon or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip. Apple’s current instructions are at Erase your Mac and reset it to factory settings. Follow the on-screen erase workflow. Afterward, the Mac activates and restarts into Setup Assistant; if you are transferring it, leave it there and turn the Mac off rather than setting it up again with your account.

Older Macs need more care. The NCSC notes that on Macs without T2, if encryption was not enabled before first use, it cannot be guaranteed that secure erase removes all sensitive data so that it cannot be recovered. The modern erase workflow should not be assumed to provide identical assurance on every historical Mac model.

Powerwash a Chromebook

Google’s consumer reset instructions say a factory reset erases user data on the Chromebook’s drive, including files in Downloads. It does not erase files in Google Drive or on external storage. Sync or copy what you need before continuing. If the Chromebook is managed by a work or school, contact its administrator instead of trying to reset it yourself.

Powerwash clears cryptographic keys that protect locally stored user and enterprise content, but Google’s enterprise documentation warns that “a powerwash does not necessarily erase all traces of user data.” Its examples include the ChromeOS copy, some encrypted temporary files, device health and diagnostic information, enterprise-domain or re-enrollment information, and cloud-synced data. This distinction matters: clearing keys can make local user content inaccessible without removing every device record or off-device copy. See Google’s Powerwash and data erasure explanation.

When a consumer reset is not enough

NCSC says, “The methods described here will prevent almost everyone from recovering data,” but qualifies that a determined expert using specialist techniques may recover some data in some circumstances. Those statements describe risk, not a universal guarantee for every device. For an absolute-zero-recovery requirement, NCSC points to secure sanitisation guidance and notes that some methods are destructive and may leave a device unusable; see Erasing devices.

If the laptop contains regulated, highly sensitive, or organization-owned data, do not select a method solely because a menu calls it “clean” or “erase.” Follow your organization’s current media-sanitization policy and instructions for the specific storage device. The appropriate method depends on the media and the assurance required; a general consumer reset guide cannot certify that a device meets a legal or organizational standard.
