No—the 2GB Raspberry Pi 5 is no longer $50 at Raspberry Pi’s announced US price. The company launched it at $50 on August 19, 2024, then announced a $12.50 increase on October 1, 2026, bringing the announced price to $77.50. That is a USD price, not a promise of the final amount at checkout: taxes, shipping, currency conversion, stock and reseller pricing can change what you pay.

What happened to the $50 Raspberry Pi 5?

Raspberry Pi Ltd introduced the 2GB Raspberry Pi 5 at $50 on August 19, 2024. That was the model’s launch price, not its current announced price. On October 1, 2026, the company announced that the price would rise by $12.50 to $77.50. See the 2024 launch announcement and the October 2026 price notice.

The $77.50 figure is Raspberry Pi’s announced USD price. It does not establish local taxes, shipping, a retailer’s price or whether the board is in stock in your region.

Is the 2GB model enough for your projects?

Two gigabytes of RAM is a workload trade-off, not a different processor tier. Raspberry Pi says the 2GB model uses a cost-optimised D0 stepping of the BCM2712 processor that is functionally identical to the previous stepping from the user’s perspective, with the same processor performance, multimedia capabilities and PCI Express bus. The lower memory capacity is the key difference relevant to choosing this version. These are the company’s claims in its launch announcement, not independent benchmark results.

When 2GB may be a sensible fit

For a project with a defined, modest workload, 2GB may be sufficient. Raspberry Pi said many users would find the memory adequate for their use cases. Because no independent RAM-specific benchmarks are established here, judge the choice by the applications you intend to run rather than assuming a particular performance level.

When to consider a higher-memory model

Raspberry Pi says users who keep a hundred browser tabs open, drive dual 4Kp60 displays, or compile complex software from source would probably stay with higher-memory models. These are vendor-provided examples, not measured thresholds or a guarantee that every such workload will fail on 2GB.

  • iRasptek PWM Active Cooler: Features intelligent speed control that dynamically responds to system demand. Under Pi OS, the fan remains off at low temperatures (≤50°C) for ultimate silence; ramps up linearly at medium temperatures (50-65°C) for efficient, low-noise cooling; and operates at full speed at high temperatures (≥65°C) to aggressively dissipate heat and prevent thermal throttling. Embedded within the system’s core drivers, it continuously safeguards your board, ensuring stable, sustained, and high-performance operation.
  • Welcome to the latest generation of Pi5: the everything computer. Featuring a 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, Pi 5 delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to Pi 4. Alongside a substantial uplift in graphics performance from an 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU; dual 4Kp60 display output ; and state-of-the-art camera support from a rearchitected Image Signal Processor, it provides a smooth desktop experience for consumers, and opens the door to new applications for industrial customers.

What the Raspberry Pi 5 platform includes

The official product page lists these Raspberry Pi 5 family specifications, including the 2GB RAM variant:

  • Broadcom BCM2712 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU and VideoCore VII GPU.
  • Dual 4Kp60 HDMI display output with HDR, plus a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder.
  • Dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0/BLE and Gigabit Ethernet. PoE+ requires a separate HAT.
  • A microSD slot supporting SDR104, two USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports.
  • Two four-lane MIPI camera/display transceivers and PCIe 2.0 x1; M.2 expansion requires a separate HAT or adapter.
  • A standard 40-pin header, USB-C 5V/5A power, an RTC powered from an external battery and a power button.

These are family-level specifications on the official Raspberry Pi 5 product page, which lists the 2GB option but does not provide a separate full datasheet for that RAM SKU in the cited material.

Budget for the whole setup, not just the board

The board price is only one part of a usable setup. Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply; you also need microSD storage to boot from the board’s card slot. A case or cooling may be appropriate for your project, and HATs or adapters add cost if you need functions such as PoE+ or M.2 storage.

Choose accessories made for Pi 5: the board does not fit the Raspberry Pi 4 case. Raspberry Pi says active cooling helps the Pi 5 perform at its best, and offers a fan-equipped case and an Active Cooler for uncased use. Cooling needs depend on workload; these are manufacturer recommendations, not independent test findings. Check the product page’s FAQ and accessory information before buying.

How to check the price before buying

  1. Start with the announced price. Use Raspberry Pi Ltd’s October 1, 2026 notice as the source for the $77.50 USD figure.
  2. Find a local approved reseller. Raspberry Pi recommends approved resellers and says they abide by its official published maximum prices. Its price notice provides that guidance.
  3. Verify the exact listing and checkout total. Confirm that the product is the 2GB Raspberry Pi 5, then check stock, shipping and taxes. A PiShop US category listing showed $77.50 while an individual product page showed $65, so do not rely on a single stale listing: compare the category listing with the individual listing and verify the live checkout price.
